NBA Europe targets October 2027 launch, Italian media reports

The NBA has set a target of October 2027 for the launch of NBA Europe and accelerated discussions with EuroLeague stakeholders, according to reports in Italian media detailing a high-stakes summit in Cernobbio, Italy. Shareholders gathered to evaluate whether to partner with North American basketball executives or independently overhaul the continent’s premier club competition.

NBA Europe Proposes 16-Team Structure for 2027

NBA executives have ramped up pressure on European counterparts to lock in a collaborative framework ahead of an anticipated October 2027 tip-off. Franco Vanni reported for La Repubblica that the proposed NBA Europe model centers on a 16-team structure featuring 12 permanent licenses and four qualification spots. The blueprint relies on centralized international broadcasting rights, upgraded arena infrastructure, premium hospitality packages, and strict cost controls designed to mirror American professional sports economics.

Adam Silver described the initiative as a once-in-a-generation opening during recent discussions. In the negotiation with EuroLeague we are making progress, Silver said, emphasizing that an agreement remains the preferred path for all parties involved. It would be better for everyone if we reached an accord.

EuroLeague Prepares to Expand to 24 Teams Independently

Should negotiations stall, EuroLeague officials have prepared a contingency plan to press forward independently. Rather than ceding operational control to North American investors, the current continental body would expand its existing competition from 20 to 24 teams. This autonomous approach relies on cementing longer-term licenses for anchor clubs and generating more predictable revenue streams to fend off external capital.

Gianni Petrucci acknowledged the gravity of the talks while noting the tournament will proceed regardless of American involvement. The most important brand in the world is investing in Europe, Petrucci stated. We hope for an agreement, but if there is no agreement, NBA Europe will start anyway.

Industry Leaders Expect New Investors to Shift Capital

Andrea Bargnani endorsed the project, pointing to its capacity to unlock dormant financial channels. It will do good for the movement, it will shift capital and involve investors who otherwise would not have entered the system, Bargnani remarked.

Maurizio Gherardini echoed the need for internal alignment as European clubs weigh their options against external disruption. The opportunity is important, Gherardini said, and to seize it we must be cohesive.
