NBA executives have overwhelmingly backed a proposal to overhaul the draft lottery system ahead of the 2026/27 season, voting to dismantle the traditional odds structure that rewards the league’s worst records. The proposed “3-2-1” lottery format, approved during a May vote, removes the top odds allocation for the three poorest regular-season finishes in an effort to curb late-season tanking.
Franchise Executives Endorse Competitive Incentive Shift
Every NBA franchise except the Memphis Grizzlies voted in favor of the lottery restructuring. Team presidents and general managers across the league suggest the modification will permanently alter how front offices approach the final months of an 82-game schedule. Minnesota Timberwolves president Tim Connelly noted that the adjustments could elevate overall league competitiveness to unprecedented levels by removing the reward structure for losing.
Brooklyn Nets general manager Sean Marks emphasized that maintaining a competitive environment from opening night through the final week remains the primary objective. Oklahoma City Thunder president Sam Presti argued that altering the lottery math creates a healthier baseline for the lower tier of the standings over the long term. Cleveland Cavaliers president Koby Altman added that the structural shift eliminates tanking as a viable strategy, leaving teams with an ongoing incentive to contest every fixture.
Accumulating Incentives Across the 82-Game Calendar
The draft lottery reform arrives on top of several recent mechanisms implemented by the league office to discourage roster stagnation and intentional rest. Over recent seasons, the NBA introduced financial penalties for resting their best players and established the play-in to expand postseason qualification races beyond the top six seeds in each conference.
With the introduction of the NBA Cup in the autumn, the pursuit of home-court advantage, direct top-six playoff qualification, the play-in race, and now the imperative to avoid the league’s basement, front offices face overlapping competitive pressures. Executives highlight that these concurrent variables create meaningful stakes throughout the entire league calendar rather than concentrating drama solely on the championship contenders.
