World number nine Iga Świątek suffered an unexpected straight-sets defeat to Belgium’s 13th seed Elise Mertens in the quarterfinals on Friday, losing 7-6(0), 6-3. Sin Chew Daily reported that the six-time Grand Slam champion’s loss upended expectations of a semifinal meeting between Świątek and Zheng.
Mertens ends Swiatek run in Beijing
Prior to Friday’s quarterfinal, Mertens had lost both of her previous career encounters against Świątek in straight sets. The Belgian player bounced back by blanking the eighth seed 7-0 in the first-set tiebreak before closing out the second set 6-3. Having previously eliminated American player Coco Gauff in the tournament, Mertens secured her second win over a major-winning opponent.
Zheng overcomes Svitolina to reach final four
Playing in the afternoon session on Friday, 24-year-old home favorite Zheng overcame sixth seed Svitolina 6-3, 7-6(6). The victory marked Zheng’s first win in their head-to-head series and returned her to the China Open semifinals for the first time in two years. It also stands as the fourth WTA 1000 semifinal appearance of her career.
Semifinal showdown at the Capital
Zheng and Mertens face off in Saturday’s night session at the tournament. Zheng holds a 1-0 lead in their prior head-to-head meetings. A victory would send the Chinese player into her first final in nearly two seasons, mark her second WTA 1000 final, and make her the first local player in the 20-year history of the China Open to reach the singles final.
Double duty for Mertens
Top seeds Zhang Shuai and Kateřina Siniaková notched a straight-sets victory over fifth seeds Storm Hunter and Kristina Mladenovic to claim their own semifinal spot, extending their winning streak as a pair to 12 matches across three tournaments this season.
