Former US Open champion Marin Čilić exited the 2026 Seoul Open Challenger in the opening round on February 26, losing to China’s Zhang Zhizhen in three sets at the Seoul Olympic Park tennis courts. The top-seeded Croatian fell 1-2 (6-7(3), 6-2, 3-6) in a match dominated by heavy serves, marking an abrupt end to his campaign at the ATP Challenger 125 event.
A Heavy Serve Battle Ends in Defeat
The opening round clash pitted two of the tour’s tallest players against one another. Neither player dropped a service game in the first set, forcing a tiebreak where Zhang seized control early and won it 7-3. Čilić responded in the second set, breaking in the first and seventh games to take a 6-2 victory and level the match.
The deciding third set remained on serve until the seventh game, when Zhang converted a crucial break to pull ahead 4-3. The Chinese player then held serve and closed out the match with an ace on match point. Over the course of the match, Zhang fired 21 aces to Čilić’s 13, out-serving the former world number three as fatigue appeared to catch up with the veteran.
Contrast in Rankings and Recent Form
While Čilić arrived in Seoul holding the 96th spot in the ATP rankings, Zhang entered the tournament at number 166. Zhang’s ranking had slipped from a career-high of 31st reached in July 2024 following an ongoing recovery from a shoulder injury. The Chinese player holds a gold medal from the 2022 Hangzhou Asian Games and a silver from the 2024 Paris Olympics mixed doubles event, and he is now pursuing his second final of the season after winning the Brisbane Challenger in February.
Čilić’s career resume remains among the most decorated in the draw. He captured the US Open singles title in 2014 by defeating Roger Federer in the semifinals, reached finals at Wimbledon in 2017 and the Australian Open in 2018, and accumulated 21 ATP tour titles. Earlier this year, he secured his 600th career match win at the Dallas Open.
Jeong Yun-Seong Leads Mixed Results for South Korean Players
South Korean players experienced mixed fortunes during the opening rounds. Jeong Yun-seong previously reached the semifinals of the Seoul Open in 2023.
Other Korean wild card entries fell in their main draw debuts.
Kwon Soon-woo Withdraws Due to Injury
Kwon Soon-woo withdrew from the tournament ahead of his scheduled opening-round match. The Chungnam Athletic Council player was forced to pull out because a knee injury sustained during the Aichi-Nagoya Asian Games failed to heal in time. With Kwon’s withdrawal, Japan’s Koki Matsuda entered the main draw as a lucky loser to face fourth-seeded Frenchman Térence Atmane, leaving Jeong Yun-seong and Hong Seong-chan as the only two South Korean singles players remaining in the main draw.
