Lionel Bosco to lead Belgian Lions for EuroBasket 2029 pre-qualification

Lionel Bosco will lead the Belgian Lions through the upcoming EuroBasket 2029 pre-qualification window after successfully stepping in as interim head coach earlier this year.

The appointment comes as the national team prepares for crucial away fixtures against Norway on November 26 and the Czech Republic on November 29. Bosco takes the reins following the departure of French coach Julien Mahé, whose staff he previously served on as an assistant.

Bosco inherits a squad that he briefly guided through an undefeated summer camp. The 45-year-old coach brings a deep familiarity with Belgian basketball to the bench, having accumulated 89 international caps during a playing career spent almost entirely domestically, save for an eight-game stint with French club JL Bourg during the 2007-08 season in Pro B.

Building a Domestic Staff of Former Internationals

To navigate the autumn fixtures, Bosco has assembled a coaching ticket entirely composed of former national team players. noted that Bosco is 45 years old and officially stepped into the role after Mahé’s exit on July 13.

Joining Bosco on the bench is Antwerp native Randy Oveneke. Oveneke played collegiately in the NCAA before returning to Europe, where he represented the Antwerp Giants, Spirou Charleroi, and Mechelen. He later transitioned into coaching roles with the Antwerp Giants, Brussels, and the Belgian men’s U18 national team, while currently managing BC Asse Ternat.

Christophe Beghin completes the coaching staff. Beghin previously worked alongside Bosco during the summer window, helping steer the team to a victory over the Czech Republic.

Chasing EuroBasket 2029 Qualification in Norway and Czechia

The immediate test for Bosco’s new staff arrives late in November with a pair of high-stakes away matches. The Belgian Lions open this window against Norway on November 26, followed by a trip to face the Czech Republic on November 29.

Back in August, Belgium defeated the Czech Republic 92–81 at Ostend, setting a positive tone for the program’s transitional phase.

That subsequent window is scheduled for February, meaning the current coaching staff is balancing immediate qualification needs with long-term roster development. Whether the newly formed staff can translate their summer momentum into competitive away victories remains to be determined on the court in late November.
