Marianne Vos secured her second elite women’s gravel world title on October 10, 2026, at the UCI Gravel World Championships in Nannup, Western Australia.
The 2026 UCI Gravel World Championships challenged competitors with a demanding 125.6km course featuring 3,179 metres of climbing around Nannup. Persistent mud and slick trail conditions shaped the race from the opening kilometres, breaking up the peloton and testing pre-race favourites.
How Marianne Vos and Rosa Klöser Broke Away on the Nannup Mud
Early climbs trimmed the lead group significantly as Dutch riders controlled the pace. A puncture forced Klöser to spend crucial minutes fixing her tyre before executing a long chase back to the front pack.
With four kilometres left on the course, Vos tightened her shoes and launched a powerful acceleration. Klöser managed to latch onto her wheel before sliding out on a rutted, slippery corner.
I knew that that final corner around the top and then the descent were going to be tricky, so I wanted to be in front and take them my own lines. But of course it’s unfortunate that Rosa crashed there.

Wendy Oosterwood (Netherlands), who won the 2026 Gravelking UCI Gravel World Series, was among the competitors unable to match that tempo. Klöser then attacked on the rolling elevated roads following the climb, attempting to thin out the Dutch contingent leading the race.

"And Rosa was really, really strong, so on the uphills I had to dig deep to follow," Vos said.
British Cycling Riders Face Self-Funded Travel Realities in Western Australia
While international stars contested the rainbow jerseys, the event underscored broader financial hurdles for competitors outside the Olympic program.
British Cycling stated that it is not currently able to provide financial or operational support for riders attending this event, citing the non-Olympic status of gravel racing. Competitors relied on personal savings, sponsor budgets, or private team assistance from outfits like Ribble Outliers to make the trip. Competitors have financed their own journeys entirely to transport themselves and their bicycles to Australia, relying on personal savings and sponsorship funds.

Even though we ride in GB cycling kit, we’ve had no communication or any support or anything from British Cycling. It was the team that supported it and got us out here.

Former British gravel champion and Traka 560 winner Maddy Nutt confirmed she received no assistance from the governing body, noting the night before the women’s elite race that they even charged riders for the skinsuits required for competition. Other athletes, including Tom Martin from Wheelbase-Cabtech-Castelli, had to cancel their travel plans entirely after finishing in the top 20 at European Championships and realizing it was too expensive without sufficient sponsorship budget.
Regarding the level of backing provided to participants at the Gravel World Championships, a representative for British Cycling noted that they take pride in seeing British athletes perform internationally at the UCI Gravel World Championships and aid in the expansion of the sport, adding that they will keep investigating available resources and avenues to back future iterations of the competition as the discipline evolves.
Life Time Grand Prix Calendar Conflict Forces Rider Decisions
The Western Australia fixture also highlighted a scheduling clash with North American gravel racing. The UCI World Championships fell on the exact same weekend as the Little Sugar Mountain Bike race, serving as the penultimate round of the Life Time Grand Prix series, where most of the field lined up for the 100K event.
Series leaders Keegan Swenson and Sofia Gomez Villafane both chose to skip the Arkansas round to race in Nannup, building their series leads through wins and rock-solid consistency that allowed them the luxury of skipping Little Sugar while maintaining a shot at the overall win. Villafane counts three wins in the series and one seventh place for a total of 90 points, sitting 12 points ahead of Lauren Stephens and 14 ahead of Cecily Decker.
