Leonardo Accioli Dies in Cortona Tractor Accident

A Midnight Silence in the Hills of Cortona

A light blue baseball cap rests in the grass next to the vintage tractor that became a fatal trap, an item Leonardo Accioli wore every day and refused to remove even when asked at school.

The 16-year-old student, living in Terontola, died late Saturday night after the vintage tractor he was driving overturned on an embankment. The tragedy unfolded at an abandoned farmhouse belonging to his late grandfather in the upper area of Terontola, a populous hamlet in Cortona, where Leonardo had gathered with a group of longtime friends for post-dinner conversation and laughs in the courtyard before heading home.

The Search and the Rescue Effort

Carabinieri units responded immediately to the area, conducting searches that led them to the overturned vehicle on an embankment where Leonardo remained trapped in the cabin and died on the impact.

Firefighters freed Leonardo from the cabin. Emergency medical responders attempted to resuscitate him, but their efforts were in vain.

An Academic Life Interrupted

Leonardo attended the second year of the Vegni Institute at Le Capezzine, where he pursued a professional hotel-service diploma, finding a supportive environment at school after enduring the prior deaths of his father and grandfather, leaving behind his mother and 20-year-old sister. Just hours before the accident, at approximately 9 p.m. Saturday, he exchanged messages with his Italian and history teacher, Alessandro Ferri, discussing upcoming class commitments and his role as student representative.

Teacher Alessandro Ferri remembered their bond, noting that Thursday they were together with a school delegation at the Cauthamente festival in Cortona where Leonardo joyfully handled photos and videos for the institute’s website, loved rap and trap music, and needed to be listened to after bearing heavy family sorrows.

Community Mourning and Postponed Matches

School officials confirmed that a specialized professional would be present in class to support mourning students alongside teachers and peers, with principal Jasmina Santini explaining that a professional would help pupils get through such a tragic time following his participation in the Cauthamente festival alongside Radio Vegni students and Professor Ferri.

A Community United in Grief

Town residents remained stunned by the loss of a youth whose life had already tested him with hardship, yet who sought his path with the energy of his teenage years.

Una decisione concordata con la squadra avversaria che ringrazio e con la Lega Calcio, per rispetto alla famiglia di Leonardo e come segno di vicinanza a suo cugino che gioca come portiere nella nostra squadra, says sports group president Alessio Topini.
