The Baseballclub Hamburg Stealers e.V. has secured a spot among the ten finalists for the 2026 „Lass machen – Geld fürs Quartier“ funding initiative hosted by Hamburger Volksbank and the Hamburger Morgenpost (MOPO), the organizations reported. Running from October 19 through October 29 at 12:00 local time, the public and bank customer voting phase determines which three non-profit organizations receive €20,000 each to advance their neighborhood projects.”
Home Plate Niendorf Project Seeks Field Improvements for Youth Teams
Founded in 1985, the Hamburg Stealers currently support roughly 80 children across seven youth divisions. The club’s nominated project, Home Plate Niendorf, aims to establish a secure and open youth facility at Vogt-Cordes-Dam to accommodate growing demand and expand access to the sport.
Heavy usage of the club’s primary home, the Jackie Robinson Ballpark, has squeezed training and game schedules for younger age groups. To compensate, youth squads have relied on a former soccer ash pitch at Vogt-Cordes-Dam that lacks standard infrastructure for baseball. The club has already laid initial groundwork by positioning a material container, purchasing a pitching machine, and preparing a second youth field.

Funding Allocation and Equipment Pool Plans
If successful in the bank and newspaper voting initiative, the Stealers plan to direct the €20,000 grant toward specific structural upgrades. Planned additions include permanent dugouts to shelter players, protective netting for the secondary youth diamond, and expanded gear for junior training sessions.
The club also intends to establish a dedicated equipment pool featuring helmets, bats, gloves, and other gear. This inventory is designed to lower financial barriers for children whose families cannot easily afford personal sports equipment. Additionally, the project outlines mobile seating options for parents, siblings, and visiting spectators.

Community Impact and Next Steps
Beyond the 80 children currently enrolled in the youth program, the upgraded facility is intended to serve other regional baseball and softball squads as well as visiting teams. While the organization has previously funded improvements through internal resources, private donations, and volunteer labor, club leadership notes that internal financial capabilities are largely exhausted.
The voting window closes on October 29, 2026, at 12:00 UTC+1, at which point Hamburger Volksbank and MOPO will determine the three winning community initiatives.
