Lawrence Dallaglio Sells 2003 Rugby World Cup Winner’s Medal for £54,000

Former England rugby captain Lawrence Dallaglio has sold his 2003 Rugby World Cup winner’s medal for £54,000 at an auction in Northamptonshire.

Auction Results at Budd’s in Northamptonshire

While the 2003 World Cup winner’s medal reached a hammer price of £54,000, it fell toward the lower end of the pre-sale estimate, which had projected a potential value between £50,000 and £80,000. An internet buyer secured the medal. In total, the auction of 12 items raised £100,500, though many other pieces of memorabilia failed to reach their reserve prices. Notable sales included a British and Irish Lions cap for £11,000, an England international cap for £8,000, and his 2003 Six Nations Championship winner’s medal for £7,500. Other items sold included a 2003-04 Champions Cup victory medal for £4,400 and a 2007 World Cup runner-up medal for £5,000.

The collection, which had an overall estimated value of £180,000, saw several prominent items fail to find buyers. Additionally, a 1993 Rugby World Cup Sevens winner’s medal was included in the auction, fetching what was described as a measly £1,100.

An Illustrious Career

Dallaglio’s career is defined by his tenure with Wasps, which he joined in 1990. As a powerful number eight, he became an essential component of Sir Clive Woodward’s England squad. He famously played every minute of England’s seven matches during their historic 2003 World Cup campaign in Australia. Over the course of his international career, he won 85 caps for England, captaining the side on 22 occasions, and represented the British & Irish Lions on three separate tours, including the 1997 series victory against South Africa.

Financial Status and Bankruptcy Proceedings

During an appearance on The High Performance podcast earlier this month, the former captain discussed his situation openly.

“As a result of getting divorced, I was made bankrupt. I had some financial problems – I could’ve done things a lot better.”

Court applications have alleged that the former player had been sporadic and unclear in providing information regarding his income and spending, while also cancelling several appointments where his rugby memorabilia was scheduled to be valued. The application noted that his spending habits meant there was currently nothing left to go towards the claims against his bankruptcy estate.

Outstanding Debts and Legal Timeline

His financial obligations include claims totaling approximately £350,000 from HM Revenue & Customs, alongside an additional £61,000 owed to two other creditors. A hearing regarding the matter, which had been scheduled for a Friday, was postponed. The sale of his assets, including the £2.4 million generated from the sale of his family home—a figure £900,000 below the original asking price—represents a difficult chapter for a player who once lit up English rugby with barnstorming runs and leadership on the pitch.
