Laurent Duvernay-Tardif discusses relationship on Ici Première

A Bakery Counter Romance in Montreal

Laurent Duvernay-Tardif spent his mornings selling bread behind a family bakery counter. Florence-Agathe Dubé-Moreau frequented that exact shop to buy loaves for a nearby neighborhood restaurant. What began as a routine exchange over pastries quietly evolved into a partnership that bridged two entirely different worlds, as the former NFL player and physician recently revealed.

Appearing on the Oct. 13, 2026, ICI Première cultural program Il restera toujours la culture, Duvernay-Tardif pulled back the curtain on the origins of their relationship.

Divided by Campuses, United Over Le Devoir

In those early days, their daily interactions stayed strictly platonic. They spent lunch breaks sitting together and reading the Montreal newspaper Le Devoir, even though Duvernay-Tardif admitted on the broadcast that he had already fallen for her.

Their daily environments could hardly have diverged more sharply. Duvernay-Tardif served as captain of the McGill University football team—an anglophone institution—while simultaneously tackling a grueling medical degree. Dubé-Moreau occupied a leadership role on a student committee within a vastly different cultural sphere.

An Impromptu Night at Usine C

The trajectory shifted with a single phone call from Dubé-Moreau. Fresh out of the shower after a practice, Duvernay-Tardif received an invitation to a contemporary dance performance at Usine C. He accepted on the spot, leaving his friends entirely bewildered by his evening plans. Unfamiliar with the medium, he frantically tried to read the synopsis beforehand.

He described the outing as his baptism in contemporary dance, and it effectively launched their romantic relationship. Duvernay-Tardif credits Dubé-Moreau with broadening his intellectual and cultural horizons, helping him forge a much deeper sensitivity to literature and the arts.

From the Super Bowl to Emergency Medicine

This personal milestone mirrors a life defined by extraordinary pivots. Born in Mont-Saint-Hilaire and raised in Montreal, Duvernay-Tardif was drafted by the Kansas City Chiefs in 2014 before capturing a Super Bowl LIV victory in 2020.

He famously chose to opt out of the subsequent NFL season to work in a long-term care facility (CHSLD) during the COVID-19 pandemic, a selfless commitment that earned him the Lou Marsh Trophy and Sports Illustrated Sportsperson of the Year honors.

After officially retiring from professional football in September 2023, Duvernay-Tardif completed his family medicine residency in June 2026 and is pursuing a surspécialisation in emergency medicine.
