Killian Nielsen details life with Mark Gastineau

Killian Nielsen, 37, discovered at age 20 that his biological father is former American football star Mark Gastineau, upending a lifetime of believing he was the son of another man.

Appearing on the television program La volta buona, Nielsen traced a complicated and distant family history marked by late reunions, estrangement from his mother Brigitte Nielsen, and his father’s declining health.

Meeting Mark Gastineau Later in Life

Nielsen grew up unaware of his paternity until his twentieth year. When he finally tracked down Gastineau, the initial encounter proved brief and fraught with domestic tension. «I saw him three times in my life: for me it was a very big emotion. I always had the desire to know my real father», Nielsen said on the broadcast.

The first visit lasted just three days because Gastineau’s wife was jealous of Nielsen’s mother. A second meeting occurred when Nielsen was 27, before substance struggles interrupted contact again. «I had my problems with alcoholism», Nielsen admitted.

Traveling to the United States Amid Deteriorating Health

A third reunion took place during the summer, when Nielsen flew to the United States alongside his partner, Laura. By then, Gastineau’s physical condition had severely deteriorated due to cancer and the lingering physiological effects of performance-enhancing drugs. «He has cancer; in the 1980s he used steroids and is paying the consequences», Nielsen said.

The trip began with a stark display of Gastineau’s physical fragility. Upon arrival at the airport, the former athlete remained in his vehicle because he lacked the strength to get out. Father and child spent their first two days confined to separate bedrooms before Gastineau found the strength to attend an NFL game together. The trip also included a stop in Pennsylvania, where Nielsen proposed to his partner.

Estrangement from Brigitte Nielsen

Alongside his complex relationship with Gastineau, Nielsen addressed his prolonged silence with his mother, Brigitte Nielsen. Communication between the two has ceased entirely for two years. «For two years we haven’t spoken, I haven’t seen any message and any call, but I hope that in the future I can get closer to her», he said.

Reflecting on the decades lost before discovering his biological roots, Nielsen noted that Gastineau harbors deep regret over his absence. «He is repentant because he never showed up in my life», Nielsen stated.
