Los Angeles Lakers Drop First Game of the Season to Portland Trail Blazers Despite Luka Doncic’s 41 Points
The Los Angeles Lakers suffered their first loss of the 2026–27 NBA season on Tuesday night, falling 136–129 to the Portland Trail Blazers at home after failing to protect a double-digit lead in the second half. Despite a 41-point, nine-assist performance from Luka Doncic, defensive lapses and inconsistent secondary scoring cost the hosts their unblemished record.
Tuesday’s defeat dropped the Lakers to a 3–1 record while exposing vulnerabilities on the defensive end that head coach JJ Redick warned must be addressed immediately. “Game plan discipline wasn’t great,” Austin Reaves said after the final buzzer, noting that the team needed sharper execution and louder communication on defense.
Defensive Vulnerabilities Surface Early in the Campaign
Although the Lakers entered the evening boasting an early three-game winning streak, organizational goals of improving a sluggish defense have yet to materialize on the floor. Los Angeles currently sits with a 113.7 defensive rating per 100 possessions—ranking 19th in the NBA, identical to the club’s defensive standing from the previous season. Portland exploited those perimeter cracks all night, racking up 136 points on the road.

Redick did not mince words when assessing his squad’s defensive containment following the loss, telling reporters that the team’s overall execution fell short of expectations. “If we mark 129 points at home, we should be capable of making enough defensive stops to win,” the head coach said, emphasizing that offensive output alone cannot carry the franchise.

Luka Doncic Carries Heavy Offensive Burden Alone
Doncic backed up his explosive 51-point outing against the Utah Jazz with another dominant display, adding five rebounds to his 41 points and nine assists. Yet the Slovenian star lacked sufficient offensive support from his supporting cast.
Austin Reaves provided a reliable secondary spark with 26 points and seven assists, while Sandro Mamukelashvili contributed 17 points. Outside of that trio, however, the rest of the rotation struggled to generate consistent offense. Walker Kessler managed just 13 points against Portland, continuing a quiet stretch following a difficult two-point night against Utah and a strong start to his adventure.

Portland Pulls Away in Closing Minutes as Damian Lillard Seals Victory
The turning point arrived in the fourth quarter after Los Angeles failed to capitalize on a 10-point advantage built during the third frame. The Trail Blazers steadily chipped away at the deficit before seizing control down the stretch.
Damian Lillard delivered the decisive blow with 42.8 seconds remaining on the clock, burying a three-pointer that pushed Portland’s lead to six points and effectively put the game out of reach for the hosts.
