KV Diksmuide Oostende ousted board member Claude Vindevogel during an extraordinary general meeting, triggering a bitter legal dispute over the second-division club’s governance. Nieuwsblad reported that the ouster follows months of boardroom infighting, financial strain, and competing claims at the Batimont Solar Park offices.
Boardroom Conflict at Batimont Solar Park
The internal crisis at KV Diksmuide Oostende intensified last summer as the club wrestled with mounting financial deficits. Disagreements surfaced regarding staff compensation, employee payouts, and sponsor relationships. While internal factions debated a suspension, three board members representing the Oostendse camp resigned in protest.
Football Vlaanderen conducted interviews and reviews, concluding that immediate restrictive measures were unnecessary. However, the legal fallout continued to multiply across local courts as various parties filed competing complaints. Claude Vindevogel subsequently initiated legal proceedings and filed a defamation complaint, successfully petitioning the Bruges Enterprise Court to temporarily block an extraordinary general meeting in September.
Legal Battles and Court Reversals
The legal environment shifted on September 30 when the Bruges Enterprise Court reversed its earlier decision and permitted the general meeting to proceed. That assembly took place on Monday, resulting in the formal dismissal of Vindevogel. Neither Vindevogel nor the three previously resigned directors from Oostende attended the session.
Vindevogel defended his tenure and disputed the legality of his dismissal. “Men want to play a high-stakes game and a character assassination has been committed against me, that much is clear. I worked hard and in all conscience always acted correctly for the club.”
Leadership Stance and Club Response
Karl Vannieuwkerke, television presenter and vice-president of KVDO alongside club president Frederik Willaert, declined to engage directly with the ongoing controversy. “On behalf of our entire board, there is a complaint of slander and defamation against the dismissed board member due to the continued dissemination of nonsense and untruths. In a ruling by the Court of Bruges, the board member in question also lost all along the line. The ruling is clear enough in that regard.”
Honorary chairman René Menu, 91, expressed regret over the turbulence affecting the club’s administration. “I am currently at home with pneumonia for a short while, but next week I will be back at the club,” Menu told Nieuwsblad. “I regret what is happening, but for me the priority is the interests of KVDO. I am going to actively search for Oostendse board members who can restore the balance in the Board of Directors as well as a general manager. Hopefully, peace can then return.”
Legal Actions and Next Court Dates
Vindevogel plans to contest his removal by petitioning for the suspension of the extraordinary general meeting’s resolution before the courts. Meanwhile, the club’s legal counsel pursues counter-actions for defamation relating to the ongoing public disputes over the governance of the second-division side.
