Kaiserslautern beats Nuremberg 1-0 for Nuremberg’s first defeat

The 1. FC Kaiserslautern inflicted the first defeat of the season on the previously unbeaten 1. FC Nürnberg with a 1-0 victory in the 2. Bundesliga top match on October 24, 2026. Striker Erencan Yardimci scored the decisive goal in the 58th minute at the Fritz-Walter-Stadion, but goalkeeper Julian Krahl secured the win by stopping ten shots to preserve the clean sheet.

Kaiserslautern entered the match with high early pressure, earning three scoring chances inside the opening fifteen minutes through Ibrahim Kanaté and Mario Sauer. Nürnberg responded when Rayan Ghrieb delivered a cross that found Porstner, whose header struck the crossbar just before the 20-minute mark. Ghrieb tested Krahl again with a sharp shot in first-half stoppage time, but the goalkeeper denied the effort with a diving save to keep the match scoreless at halftime.

The high tempo continued after the interval as Nürnberg’s Piet Scobel missed wide and Thierry Tazemeta hit the post on a counter-attack. In the 54th minute, Krahl used a decisive foot save, resembling a handball goalkeeper, to block Scobel from close range. Four minutes later, Sauer collected a cleared free kick near the edge of the penalty area and chipped the ball into the box, where Yardimci rose to head a shot past goalkeeper Jan Reichert into the left corner.

Erencan Yardimci Scores and Exits with Injury

Yardimci’s impact proved brief following his decisive strike. Having entered the match as a substitute 21 minutes earlier, the Turkish forward sustained an Achilles tendon injury just nine minutes after scoring his goal and had to be substituted immediately.

Nürnberg manager Miroslav Klose adjusted his side as the pressure mounted on the visitors. Despite recording 31 total shots over the course of the evening, Nürnberg failed to break through the Kaiserslautern defense. “I believe that the chances were there to win the match,” Klose stated after the final whistle. “I believe in total there were 31 shots. That is enough to score at least one goal, but no reproach for the boys, they left their hearts on the pitch.”

Kaiserslautern Pulls Level with Nürnberg in League Table

With the 1-0 victory, Kaiserslautern pulled level on points with Nürnberg in the league table. Nürnberg remains in second place despite suffering their maiden defeat of the campaign.

“It was an unbelievably nice victory, an unbelievably good match,” Krahl said regarding his ten-save performance and the team effort. “I try to bring my performance. I have fun stopping balls — definitely. But it only works as a team. As a team, we have no desire to concede a goal.”

Nürnberg travels to face FC St. Pauli on Sunday afternoon at 13:30 local time, while Kaiserslautern returns home to host Hertha BSC on Saturday afternoon at 13:00 local time.
