Hertha BSC’s Winning Streak Ends in Kiel, Nürnberg Held to Draw by Cottbus

FC Nürnberg was held to a 1-1 draw by Energie Cottbus and lost its leading goalscorer to injury.

Herthas Winning Streak Ends in Kiel

The winning run of Hertha BSC ended abruptly in Schleswig-Holstein as the Berlin club was held to a 0:0 draw by struggling Holstein Kiel. After opening the second-tier campaign with seven consecutive victories, the visitors failed to break down a resolute defense before an attendance of 11,750 spectators. The result leaves Kiel at the bottom of the standings as the only winless team in the division, though the disciplined display provided a vital boost for under-pressure coach Tim Walter.

Hertha missed the opportunity to match a historic league benchmark. Hannover 96 in the 1986/87 season was the only team since the introduction of the single-division 2. Bundesliga to win the first eight games.

Berlin’s primary undoing on the pitch was poor finishing. Holstein goalkeeper Timon Weiner was forced into three key saves during the opening half-hour, stopping attempts from Oluwaseun Adewumi in the 11th and 15th minutes and another from Sebastian Grönning in the 31st minute. Kiel grew into the fixture and created the best scoring opportunity of the first half when Phil Harres headed toward goal, only to be denied by Hertha goalkeeper Marius Gersbeck in the 42nd minute.

Missed Chances and Injury Blows in the North

Holstein suffered a major personnel setback when the season debut of Sebastian Schonlau ended prematurely in the 50th minute. The former HSV-Kapitän suffered a recurrence of a thigh injury, forcing him off the pitch.

Hertha dominated the chances following the restart but failed to capitalize. Adewumi broke through on a long-range sprint in the 53rd minute only to be stopped once more by Weiner. Grönning then directed a close-range header against the goalpost in the 59th minute, and substitute Luca Schuler missed a clear scoring chance during the closing stages in the 83rd minute.

Nürnberg Stumbles in Cottbus and Loses Zoma

Meanwhile, 1. FC Nürnberg failed to capitalize on Hertha’s stumble at the top of the table. Miroslav Klose’s side managed only a hard-fought 1-1 draw against promoted Energie Cottbus, a match that also delivered a significant personnel concern regarding leading goalscorer Mohamed Ali Zoma.

Klose had warned before kickoff that the fixture in Cottbus would prove one of the toughest tests of the season. The hosts tested Nürnberg early as Justin Butler missed two glaring opportunities in the ninth and tenth minutes. Zoma, who entered the match with seven goals as the league’s top scorer, was forced off in the 33rd minute with a shoulder injury sustained during the opening phase, leaving the pitch to fair applause from the home supporters. Nürnberg nearly took the lead before halftime through Tim Janisch and William Böving, but Cottbus struck first after the interval when Leonardo Bittencourt exploited a long ball behind the defensive line to set up Butler for the opening goal in the 56th minute. Nürnberg salvaged a point when Styopa Mkrtchyan leveled the score from close range in the 79th minute.
