The 50-year-old official met with the supervisory board of the Hessian club late Friday evening at Frankfurt Airport, where board members voted unanimously in favor of his appointment. Before this decision, he had emerged from the beginning as one of the favorites in the search alongside other candidates such as Christoph Spycher from Young Boys Bern, and convinced the Frankfurt leadership during discussions primarily with the substantial depth of his presentation after positive talks with board CEO Axel Hellmann and supervisory board chairman Mathias Beck.

While the club leadership in Frankfurt had not yet formally confirmed the appointment publicly, media outlets reported the agreement as finalized. Chatzialexiou negotiated a specific release clause into his contract with the second-division club back in August, allowing him to join Eintracht for a modest transfer fee.

Contract Terms and Release Clause Valuation

Media reports on the financial parameters of the transition indicate that the buyout fee sits below one million euros, with reports specifying a sum of less than 500,000 euros. Chatzialexiou secured this release mechanism during a contract extension signed in early August, months after taking over the role in Nürnberg in the summer of 2024.

Sky reported that the incoming official has already signed a long-term agreement with Eintracht Frankfurt stretching through the summer of 2030, with a contract date running up to February 1, 2027. The timeline for his actual arrival in Frankfurt remains a subject of ongoing discussions between the two clubs.

Nürnberg Reaction and Directorial Precedent

FC Nürnberg, where Chatzialexiou built a strong sporting record by appointing head coach Miroslav Klose and currently ranks second in the second division, faces this departure as the German-Greek official built a strong track record in Nürnberg. Speaking ahead of an away fixture against FC St. Klose warned that the commotion surrounding the imminent departure must not become a disrupting factor, stating: Nee, das wäre eine Ausrede, die zu einfach wäre. The FCN announced that it would communicate further regarding the matter during the course of the day.

For Chatzialexiou, the move represents a return to familiar surroundings. The Frankfurt-born official previously worked as a youth coach at Eintracht until 2009 before advancing his career through leadership roles with the German Football Association (DFB). He now steps into the vacancy left by Markus Krösche, who parted ways with the Bundesliga club by mutual agreement in mid-October.

Coaching Staff Additions

Following the departure of Markus Krösche, head coach Adi Hütter explained: Nach dem Weggang von Markus war es klar, dass dadurch eine Lücke entsteht. Because Timmo Hardung takes on more duties away from the team, a space opened up for Sebastian Rode. Hütter stated: Das freut mich sehr. Was sollte ich als Nächstes lesen? Rode, aged 36, is a true club legend in Frankfurt who made a total of 278 competitive appearances for Eintracht between 2010 and 2014 as well as 2019 and 2024, and served as captain during the legendary European Cup campaign in 2022. Now, his former captain is set to support him again; Rode will celebrate his debut on the coaching bench as early as Sunday against HSV live on DAZN at 17:30. Rode is currently completing a trainee program with the Hessian club, cycling through all possible departments of the organization.
