Ireland-Austria Match Interrupted by Pro-Palestinian Protests

The Republic of Ireland’s UEFA Nations League match against Austria at Dublin Arena on Thursday was temporarily halted twice after spectators launched pro-Palestinian protests on the pitch. The interruptions occurred during the first half of a fixture that ultimately finished in a 2-2 draw.

Tennis Balls and Flags Stoppages at Dublin Arena

The first disruption unfolded roughly 19 minutes into the match when spectators threw tennis balls wrapped in stickers bearing the colors of the Palestinian flag onto the playing surface. Players left the pitch for several minutes while stadium staff cleared the balls before play resumed. A second interruption occurred at the 35th minute when a spectator ran onto the turf waving a Palestinian flag, forcing a brief halt to the action.

The demonstrations followed an ongoing controversy surrounding Ireland’s Nations League fixture against Israel on Sunday. Following intense debate over a potential boycott in protest of Israel’s military campaign in Gaza, the Irish squad ultimately travelled to Hungary to play the fixture in a nearly empty stadium, securing a 3-0 victory.

Demonstrators Oppose Sporting Ties with Israel in Dublin

Outside the Dublin Arena on Thursday evening, approximately 200 demonstrators gathered to participate in a “Stop the Game” campaign opposing sporting ties with Israel. Attendees voiced strong opposition to the fixture proceeding under the current geopolitical circumstances.

“I am totally against the fact that these two matches against Israel take place,” demonstrator Joanne Doyle told reporters on the scene. “The sport is political and it’s happened on many occasions that people boycott events.” Fellow demonstrator Mark Coomey added that Ireland should not risk complicity in the conflict.

Ireland has maintained a long-standing diplomatic position supporting the Palestinian cause, formally recognizing a Palestinian state in 2024 alongside Spain and Norway. The Irish government has repeatedly condemned the war in Gaza, which escalated following the October 7, 2023, attacks led by Hamas in southern Israel.

Upcoming Fixtures on Neutral Territory

The Football Association of Ireland previously determined that hosting the return leg against Israel on home soil would be too logistically complex and sensitive. As a result, Sunday’s upcoming return fixture is scheduled to be played on neutral ground in Serbia.
