Huelva honors ten figures and institutions for 150th city anniversary

Huelva marks 150 years since receiving its official charter as a city with a civic ceremony on Tuesday evening at the Palacio de Congresos in the Casa Colón, honoring ten local entities and individuals who shaped the capital’s social, cultural, and economic fabric. The anniversary traces back to a royal decree signed by King Alfonso XII on September 17, 1876, elevating the settlement’s administrative status. City officials structured the milestone tributes around ten specific areas: social commitment, culture, historical heritage, economic enterprise, sports, port operations, academic knowledge, traditions, and international reach.

Ten Honorees Marking a Century and a Half of Local History

The Compañía de las Hermanas de la Cruz receives the social commitment distinction, recognizing 116 years of continuous care provided to residents in need. In the cultural sector, the Fundación José Caballero takes the honor for safeguarding the legacy of the local artist. The Real Sociedad Colombina Onubense is honored for protecting and spreading colombina memory, while the Federación Onubense de Empresarios secures the economic development category for representing the regional business community and employment sector.

Sports heritage takes center stage through the Real Club Recreativo de Huelva, founded in 1889 and formally recognized as the Decano del fútbol español. Alongside the club, the Port Authority of Huelva receives an acknowledgment for its foundational role in the maritime and economic expansion of the urban center. The Universidad de Huelva earns the knowledge category award for educating generations of students following the grassroots citizen movement that led to its establishment.

Traditional heritage is marked by the Hermandad de Nuestra Señora de la Cinta Coronada, celebrating its 625th anniversary of devotion and the traditional pilgrimage descent from the Conquero. Urban transformation falls to the Colegio Oficial de Arquitectos de Huelva, while badminton world and Olympic champion Carolina Marín receives the international projection award for her global athletic career.

Proposed Gold Medal for King Felipe VI

Complementing the ten organizational and individual honors, municipal authorities introduced a formal proposal to award the Gold Medal of the City of Huelva to King Felipe VI. The distinction establishes an institutional link to the original royal decree granted by Alfonso XII a century and a half ago. Tuesday’s gathering at the Casa Colón begins at 19:00 local time and remains open to the general public until reaching venue capacity.
