Hotoku Gakuen Manager Kenji Osumi Praises Nanato Sakakibara

Hanshin Tigers first-round draft pick Nanato Sakakibara earned high praise from Hotoku Gakuen High School manager Kenji Osumi, who highlighted the outfielder’s elite defensive instincts and character as he transitions to professional baseball.

Entering Hotoku Gakuen With Strong Character

Manager Kenji Osumi recalled that Nanato Sakakibara first arrived at Hotoku Gakuen with a well-rounded skill set spanning running, hitting, and fielding. Beyond his athletic abilities, Osumi noted that Sakakibara’s respectful greetings and diligent personal conduct immediately set him apart as someone who would develop reliably.

Developing Into a Reliable Ace and Outfielder

By the autumn of his second year, Sakakibara took on the team’s ace pitching number, throwing fastballs exceeding 140 kilometers per hour with strong control. Osumi expressed particular astonishment at Sakakibara’s defensive range and throwing strength when deployed in center field, describing his outfield defense as the best he has seen in his twenty-plus years as a coach and manager at the school. Osumi attributed this range to an exceptionally fast first step, explaining that the player often began moving or shifting weight even before the batter made contact.

Navigating Pandemic Challenges and Team Unity

Osumi noted that Sakakibara’s cohort faced significant disruptions due to the COVID-19 pandemic, with the autumn prefectural tournament complicated by infection outbreaks and limited practice time just before games. Despite these obstacles, Sakakibara and his teammates united through self-sacrifice to maintain team focus. Osumi described Sakakibara’s personality using the teachings of Ninomiya Sontoku, characterizing him as a selfless individual who puts others first and remains remarkably humble despite his natural talents.

Tanaka noted plans to mold Sakakibara in the mold of Kazuki Maruyama, a former Meiji standout drafted in the second round by the Tokyo Yakult Swallows. Later, current manager Toshimi Totsuka promised to help Sakakibara surpass that precedent, providing an environment that allowed the player's batting to advance significantly with improved situational awareness and power to the opposite field.

Stepping Up on the National and Professional Stages

Sakakibara earned selection to the Japan national university team, gaining valuable experience as a regular starter in major international competitions. Osumi emphasized that Sakakibara regularly maintains communication before and after league series, consistently visiting to pay respects after returning from tournaments. Following the Tigers’ selection, Osumi offered congratulations alongside encouragement to view the draft milestone as a starting point rather than a finish line.
