Hoo Pang Ron and Lai Pei Jing reach French Open semi-finals

Malaysian badminton player Hoo Pang Ron reached his first career consecutive semi-finals at the French Open on Friday at Arena Grand Paris, crediting the on-court reassurance of his partner, Lai Pei Jing, after an exhausting three-game quarter-final win. The world No. 31 secured a 21–17, 20–22, 21–18 victory over Germany’s world No. 27 pairing of Marvin Seidel and Thuc Phuong Nguyen, building directly on their semi-final appearance at the Denmark Open the previous week.

Partnership Trust Fuels Run in Paris

Pang Ron and Pei Jing faced an uphill battle throughout the week in France, needing three hard-fought matches that all went the full distance to reach the last four. Reflecting on the turning point against Seidel and Nguyen, Pang Ron pointed directly to the steadying presence of his partner when errors began to mount during the tight second game.

“She gave me more confidence and asked me to do whatever I wanted to do, and she would follow me,” Pang Ron said in a post-match interview. “Even when I played some shots wrongly, she said it was okay and that we could still do it.”

That psychological reset allowed the independent duo to steady their nerves and close out the decider 21–18. The result is a first for Pang Ron, who has never previously put together back-to-back semi-final runs.

“I’m really happy. This is our first time reaching consecutive semi-finals. I’ve never done this in my career before, so thanks to my partner,” Pang Ron noted. “But we have to keep focusing on the next match.”

Battling Through Three-Game Marathons

The path to the Arena Grand Paris semi-finals tested the pair’s physical and mental endurance across multiple rounds. In their opening match, Pang Ron and Pei Jing dropped the first game before fighting back to eliminate China’s Gao Jia Xuan and Wu Meng Ying 14–21, 21–15, 21–15.

They followed that performance on Thursday with another three-game test, overcoming Taiwan’s Liu Kuang Heng and Hsu Yin Hui 21–13, 13–21, 21–17. Their quarter-final opponents, Seidel and Nguyen, arrived with momentum after knocking out pairs in the opening two rounds, including Malaysia’s Goh Soon Huat and Shevon Lai alongside China’s second seeds Jiang Zhen Bang and Wei Ya Xin.

Pei Jing emphasized that maintaining strict tactical discipline amid the narrow margins proved essential to surviving the pressure.

“It was really point for point throughout the match,” Pei Jing said. “We were trying to focus on every single shot, what we had to do and our strategy.”

Upcoming Semi-Final Opponents in Paris

Pang Ron and Pei Jing advance to face China’s sixth seeds Guo Xin Wa and Cheng Fang Hui for a place in the French Open final. The Chinese duo presents another challenge as the independent Malaysian pair looks to convert their recent consistency into a championship match appearance.
