Hanamaki Higashi secured a 5-0 victory over Ariake in the opening round of the National Sports Festival hardball high school baseball tournament at Hirosaki City Sports Park Baseball Stadium in Aomori Prefecture, as recorded in tournament play on October 3. The tournament opener paired the summer Koshien quarterfinalist from Iwate against the 熊本 representative.
Pitchers Keep Game Scoreless Through Four Innings
Both pitching staffs locked down the scoreboard through the early frames, leaving the game scoreless through four innings. Hanamaki Higashi starter Shun Sugawara worked through early pressure, stranding runners on second and third in the first inning. Ariake starter Shodai Sakaguchi matched him zero for zero until the top of the fifth frame.
Breaking the Scoreless Tie in the Fifth
Hanamaki Higashi broke open the scoreless deadlock in the top of the fifth inning. With runners on first and third and no outs, Ruru Tsurumai executed a squeeze bunt to bring home the game’s first run. Following the play, Ariake made a pitching change, bringing in Saito to relieve Sakaguchi.

Late-Inning Rallies Seal the Victory
The Iwate representatives extended their lead in the sixth inning when a wild pitch allowed a run to score for a 2-0 advantage. With one out and the bases loaded, a ground ball to shortstop by Sogo Saito drove in another run. Hanamaki Higashi added two more insurance runs in the seventh inning, highlighted by a sacrifice fly to right field by Fumiya Akama and consecutive hits from Daisho Kojige and Kenshin Manya to cap the 5-0 final score.
