Great Osobor recovers from knee injury to play again for Spain

Recovery at the Meyer Institute of Sport in Los Angeles

Great Osobor is continuing his rehabilitation from a torn left anterior cruciate ligament and meniscus at the Meyer Institute of Sport in El Segundo, Los Angeles, where he has lived since February. The player suffered the severe knee injury during his second international appearance, playing against Georgia at the Santiago Martín arena in La Laguna nearly a year ago.

The injury halted momentum that began just days earlier during his debut in Copenhagen, where he posted 12 points and eight rebounds in a victory against Denmark. His teammates praised his physical presence and versatility during those opening fixtures.

The Path From Tudela to the National Team

Born in Tudela, Navarre, to Nigerian parents John and Mabel, Osobor moved to England at age 12 before relocating to the United States at 18. From Navarra, where his parents, John and Mabel arrived from Nigeria, at 12 years old he moved to England and at 18 he went to the USA, where he completed an excellent collegiate career across Montana State, Utah State, and Washington before starting his professional career with the German club Science Jena.

Reflecting on the sequence that led to the injury in La Laguna, Osobor noted that his initial instinct upon hitting the floor was to stand up and keep playing. Medical evaluations later confirmed the tear in his left knee, requiring surgery in Madrid performed by Dr. Manuel Leyes, a few days later.

Chus Mateo and other federation figures have maintained regular communication with the player, sending check-in messages as he progresses through his workouts. The Spanish Federation has not left the player alone for a single second, neither economically nor emotionally, from his operation in Madrid to his recovery in Los Angeles. He is monitored by Elena Isla, head of the Medical Area, and by a Chus Mateo with whom he has regular contact: Me envía mensajes, pregunta cómo voy…

Next Steps in Individual Training

Osobor will not feature in Spain’s upcoming qualifying window in late November, which includes matches in Montenegro and Santiago against Greece as the team pursues qualification for the 2027 World Cup in Qatar. He is currently focusing on strengthening his quadriceps through individual shooting drills and non-contact workouts.

With his contract in Germany concluded, Osobor expressed interest in playing in the Liga Endesa, though he noted complications regarding his domestic quota status due to his international upbringing.
