Girona FC will visit Real Sociedad’s reserve team, Sanse, at the Zubieta training ground on Saturday, adding another new venue to the club’s growing collection since returning to professional football in 2008. The fixture comes just days after Girona earned a 2-0 Copa del Rey victory over Cuarte at the Juan Guerrero “El Lobo” stadium on Tuesday, meaning the Catalan side will tick off two new stadiums within a single week.
A Rare Trip to Zubieta
Saturday’s match marks the third stadium where Girona has visited Sanse. When the two sides met during the 2021-22 promotion-winning campaign under manager Míchel, Girona secured a 1-2 victory through goals from Bernardo Espinosa and an own goal, played at the stadium of Anoeta. Decades earlier, during stints in Segunda B in the 1980s and 1990s, away matches against the Basque reserve team took place at the now-demolished Atotxa Stadium. Records show Girona dropped both of those historical fixtures in San Sebastián, falling 4-2 in September 1987 and 3-2 in March 1992.

Upgraded Facilities in San Sebastián
Real Sociedad has spent recent years modernizing the infrastructure at the Zubieta facility to accommodate both the men’s reserve side—currently competing in its second season in Segunda División—and the club’s senior women’s team, which hosted Fenerbahce there on Wednesday. These structural enhancements cleared the way for official league fixtures to be hosted inside the club’s training complex.
Expanding the Stadium Collection
For Girona, playing at Zubieta continues a long-running tally of unprecedented away grounds encountered since returning to professional football in 2008. The most recent stadium that ceased to be unprecedented for the Girona side was the Cartuja in Seville, where since last season Betis has played its matches while the Benito Villamarín undergoes remodeling. Míchel’s squad picked up a 1-1 draw during their first visit to the Cartuja last season.
