We’re going to be in this thing until the end now.
Head coach John Harbaugh stated this after a 27-21 overtime win against the Houston Texans that lifts the New York Giants to 4-2-1 and into first place in the NFC East heading into their bye week.
Sunday’s overtime win over the Houston Texans at 27-21 has the New York Giants sitting at 4-2-1 and firmly atop the NFC East as the team enters its bye week. According to Bigblueview, head coach John Harbaugh assessed the team’s standing after the hard-fought victory by stating, We’re going to be in this thing until the end now.
Nearly halfway through the season, the Giants stand out as the only team in their division feeling good about themselves. According to Bigblueview, ESPN’s Dan Graziano noted that no one has wanted to take the Giants seriously, yet they carry at least a 1.5-game division lead into Week 8. Harbaugh has made a difference in his first season as head coach by helping the squad avoid mistakes, overcome injuries, and find ways to win at the wire.
While the Giants hold first place, the rest of the division deals with major struggles. The Philadelphia Eagles and Dallas Cowboys both sit at 2-4. The Eagles face a fall after losing starting quarterback Jalen Hurts for the remainder of the season due to blood clots, alongside a myriad of other injuries and a regressed offensive line. The Washington Commanders sit at 1-4-1, winless in three division games.
Roster Changes Test New York
The Giants’ path to 4-2-1 required dealing with substantial roster attrition. The team lost starting quarterback Jaxson Dart for the season, forcing them to turn to their third starting quarterback. J.J. McCarthy stepped into that role, proving he is far from an ordinary third-string option. The Giants also lost defensive star Brian Burns for the year, alongside starters Tremaine Edmunds and Chauncey Golston, while defensive tackle Roy Robertson-Harris missed the entire campaign.
Every type of situation, they met the same way. Maybe it started with [QB] Jaxson Dart, then it went to the next, the next, the next, to [ILB] Tremaine Edmunds this week.
John Harbaugh, New York Giants head coach
Harbaugh pointed to these shared experiences as the foundation of the team’s resilience. Offensive coordinator Matt Nagy called an outstanding game for McCarthy against Houston, while running back Eric Skattebo bounced back following a soft benching the previous week. On the defensive side, edge rusher Abdul Carter dominated the second half, and cornerback Deonte Banks effectively shadowed wide receiver Nico Collins.
Giants Prepare For Stretch Run
With the bye week arriving, the Giants hold the betting favoritism to win the division. Harbaugh emphasized that the tests are far from over as the team prepares for the stretch run.

The two most important games of the season will be coming up after we come back from the bye, which will set the direction for the rest of the season, really. But we’re going to be in this thing until the end now. This was a pivotal game.

The team will now use the upcoming break to refine their strategy and ensure they remain competitive as they enter the most critical phase of their schedule.
