Geoffroy Roux de Bézieux Takes Helm of 2030 Winter Olympics After Governance Crisis
Geoffroy Roux de Bézieux is the new president of the Alpes 2030 Winter Olympic and Paralympic Games organizing committee, stepping into the role seven weeks after the resignation of former mogul skiing champion Edgar Grospiron. The appointment on October 29, 2026, at the committee’s headquarters in Décines-Charpieu near Lyon, follows months of internal turmoil that severely disrupted the leadership team tasked with delivering the French Alps Games.
Stakeholders in the Alpes 2030 project elected the 64-year-old business executive following a turbulent period marked by high-profile departures. Grospiron stepped down on September 10, 2026, after serving a year and a half in the post. His exit followed the February departure of his number 2 Cyril Linette, as well as resignations from the operations director, the communications director, and remuneration committee chairman Bertrand Méheut, who took two other members of that external instance with him.
Stepping Into the Role With Corporate Experience
Roux de Bézieux brings a long resume in business leadership to the organizing committee, having led the Mouvement des entreprises de France (Medef) from 2018 to 2023 and headed Unédic. He also served on the board of directors for the Paris 2024 Olympic Games as a representative of the economic sector. Within the Alpes 2030 committee, he has led the remuneration committee since April.
FRANCE'S FORMER MAIN BUSINESS LOBBY BOSS GEOFFROY ROUX DE BEZIEUX NAMED PRESIDENT OF THE 2030 WINTER OLYMPICS ORGANISING COMMITTEE, ORGANISERS SAY
Speaking to reporters after his election at the extraordinary general meeting, Roux de Bézieux called the position the job of a lifetime!
He acknowledged the successful execution of the Paris Games, stating he wants to recreate that positive experience for the French public in 2030. When questioned about his business background and potential corporate ties, he maintained that commercial success relies on quality rather than personal connections, stating, You won’t sell a product if it is bad… It’s not about cronyism.
Balancing Political Pressures and Operational Planning
The organizing committee’s stakeholders praised the new president’s listening skills and understanding of both regional territories and economic sectors. Sports Marina Ferrari highlighted his qualities of listening, while former Michel Barnier emphasized his capacity to respect teams—a pointed nod to the management friction that plagued Grospiron’s tenure. Critics had previously targeted Grospiron’s management style amid a heavily politicized project involving national and local entities with competing regional priorities.
With the opening ceremony three and a half years away, Roux de Bézieux inherits an immediate to-do list that includes securing corporate sponsorships, stabilizing internal staff morale, and managing various stakeholders. The leadership transition coincides with the stabilization of the sports program and the distribution of events between the host regions of Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes and Provence-Alpes-Côte d’Azur. During an inspection visit in September, International Olympic Committee officials noted that the organizing teams are positioned to transition from strategy to detailed operational planning, particularly following the relocation of ice events to the Lyon area.
Next Steps for Alpes 2030
Roux de Bézieux is scheduled to assume his duties on Monday, when he begins active on-the-ground visits.
