The American Football Verband Deutschland is launching its inaugural nationwide Schul-Flag Bowl tournament on Friday, October 2, 2026, bringing youth school teams to the Sportpark Ostra in Dresden. Running alongside the GFL Bowl weekend, the two-day event showcases 5-versus-5, non-contact flag football in the U14 mixed division as governing bodies push to demonstrate the sport’s viability in physical education.
Backed by sponsor DKB, the tournament features student rosters representing Hamburg, Bavaria, Saxony, North Rhine-Westphalia, Rhineland-Palatinate, Berlin, and Hesse. Participating institutions include Stadtteilschule Poppenbüttel, Erasmus-Grasser-Gymnasium, Gymnasium Dresden Gorbitz, ENS Offenbach, Crazy Monkeys Freiham, Saxony International School Reinsdorf, TFG Desperados, GDB Eagles, FWS Mainz, LMG Rheinhausen, and Lilienthal-Gymnasium Berlin.
Opening Matchups and Format at Sportpark Ostra
Competition begins at 5:00 p.m. local time on Friday at pitch 11 in Dresden’s Sportpark Ostra. Every participating team plays two preliminary matches on opening day before returning to the field Saturday morning at 8:30 a.m. for two additional group-stage fixtures.
Following round-robin play, the tournament shifts directly into placement brackets. The top four teams advance to the semifinals to battle for the championship final. Meanwhile, teams finishing fifth through eighth contest a separate placement round, and squads landing ninth to eleventh square off in direct head-to-head matches so that every single position in the final standings is decided on the field.
Discrepancies in Team Totals and Regional Reach
While primary announcements from the American Football Verband Deutschland list 11 participating school teams from seven federal states, other coverage notes a broader projected field of 16 school teams drawing from roughly 10 federal states and bringing approximately 250 students and supervisors to Dresden. The AFVD framework specifically details the 11 registered squads competing on pitch 11, reflecting the logistical realities confirmed ahead of the Friday opening whistle.
Competition rules mandate that each 12-player roster include at least four female athletes, upholding the coeducational format. Officiating duties across the tournament rely on 20 referees, utilizing a “students refereeing students” initiative intended to foster youth officiating talent within the sport’s domestic structure.
AFVD Invites Officials to Observe Youth Flag Football
The timing of the Dresden showcase coincides with a broader institutional pivot toward youth development. Following flag football’s confirmation for the 2028 Summer Olympics program in Los Angeles, the AFVD extended official invitations to the cultural ministries of all German federal states and the German School Sports Foundation to observe the tournament firsthand.
“Whoever wants to see what flag football can achieve at schools should look to Dresden this weekend,” said Denis Milanovic, flag football sports director, pointing to the mixed-gender, peer-to-peer nature of the competition.
Students Receive Tickets for GFL Championship Game
Following the trophy presentation, all participating students and staff receive complimentary tickets from the governing body to attend the effect ENERGY GFL championship game at the nearby Rudolf-Harbig-Stadium.
