Formula 1 driver Fernando Alonso revealed that his son, Leonard, experienced his first taste of motorsport at just two months old when the two-time world champion placed him in a kart and let him feel the wind on his face.
Early Introduction to Karts at Two Months
Leonard, the son of Alonso and journalist Melissa Jiménez, is already familiar with the family trade. During an interview on Cadena SER’s program El Larguero, Alonso shared that he held his infant son in a kart when the boy was only two months old. “He already noticed the air in his face,” Alonso said with a laugh.
Now six months old, Leonard is a very cheerful child who helps offset the difficulties Alonso faced on the Formula 1 tracks this season. “Professionally, this year has been a ten,” Alonso said. “He is a very smiling child and it is amazing. When I am at home, the few moments that I am, it compensates for everything professional that we are having.”

Speaking to BBC Sport, Alonso explained that his desire to keep racing stems from an internal drive and continued self-belief. “First of all, this is my life,” Alonso said after months of considering stepping away from the sport. “I carry it in my blood, I keep competing, I keep enjoying and, in a way, this is a way of life.”

Family Travel Plans for the F1 Calendar
With his future secured on the grid, Alonso plans to integrate his family more closely into his racing schedule. Next season, the driver hopes to share the paddock atmosphere, global travel, and behind-the-scenes moments with his son and partner.
“Next year I want to share a little more with him the circuits, trips around the world, take a lot of photos,” Alonso stated. “Because when I leave Formula 1 it is clear that I am not going to travel to 24 countries every year. Hopefully I can share something more with them.”
