German alpine skier Emma Aicher finished third in the giant slalom at Sölden, Austria, securing her best career result in the discipline, as reported by sueddeutsche.de. The 22-year-old crossed the finish line on the Rettenbachferner glacier to take third place behind American winner Paula Moltzan and runner-up Lara Colturi, who competes for Albania.
A Breakthrough on Her Weakest Event
Aicher celebrated enthusiastically after finishing the opening race of the alpine ski season. Coming off a strong previous campaign, the young German is regarded as a contender for the overall World Cup title this winter. The giant slalom is her weakest discipline, with her previous career-best in the event being a fourth-place finish in Åre, Sweden, last March. That context made her performance in Tyrol particularly striking, especially given that she sat in ninth place after the first run.
Shiffrin Settles for Seventh After Leading First Run
American star Mikaela Shiffrin held the lead after the opening run but ultimately finished seventh, missing out on what would have been the 111th World Cup victory of her career. The six-time overall World Cup champion stated prior to the season that she plans to contest fewer races in her signature slalom discipline this winter to concentrate on giant slalom and Super-G, describing the upcoming months as a “season of exploration.”
Mixed Results for the German and Austrian Fields
Other notable competitors faced varied fortunes on the Tyrolean glacier. Aicher’s teammate Lena Dürr finished 22nd, while Kira Weidle-Winkelmann, whose strengths lie in the speed disciplines, placed 26th. In the Austrian camp, Julia Scheib, the previous year’s winner and best giant slalom skier of last winter, crashed out during the first run and failed to finish.
