Detroit Lions head coach Dan Campbell confirmed that defensive coordinator Kelvin Sheppard will remain in his position following a 32-26 defeat to the Carolina Panthers, while warning that personnel changes are imminent to address the league’s worst-ranked defense. Speaking on the local radio station 97.1 The Ticket, Campbell addressed mounting scrutiny over the unit’s performance after four weeks of the NFL season.
Lions Allow League Worst Passing and Total Yards
The Lions’ defensive numbers after four games highlight the scale of the challenge facing the coaching staff. Detroit enters its next matchup allowing an NFL-worst 304 passing yards per game, alongside 423.8 total yards per contest, which also ranks last in the league. Opponents are scoring an average of 31.8 points per game against the Lions, a mark better than only one other team across the league.
Despite those figures, Campbell declined to place sole blame on Sheppard, who is in his second season as defensive coordinator. “Our discipline is not at the level, everywhere,” Campbell told 97.1 The Ticket. “We’re playing very average football right now, and it’s not just the defense.” He noted that the offense and special teams must also raise their execution.

Campbell Warns Underperforming Players Face Roster Changes
While retaining Sheppard, Campbell signaled that underperforming players face immediate consequences. Describing the defense as a “work in progress,” the coach stated his intention to give other players an opportunity on the field. “We’re not going to accept mediocrity. That’s not what we do here. We’ve got too many guys that play at a high level, and we’re going to raise the floor of this team,” Campbell said.
General manager Brad Holmes has explored options to reinforce the secondary, though no major roster transactions appeared imminent. The front office continues to evaluate personnel internally as the team prepares for its next fixture.
Upcoming Matchup Against the Cardinals
Detroit holds a 2-2 record heading into Week 5. The team travels to face the Arizona Cardinals on Sunday, October 11. Arizona enters the game with a 1-3 record through its first four outings. Bookmakers have installed Detroit as a 4.5-point favorite for the matchup.
A defeat in Arizona would drop the Lions to 2-3 ahead of their bye week, intensifying the pressure on Sheppard’s defense and the coaching staff.
