CME Group announced plans to launch the world’s first baseball futures contracts, tying derivatives directly to the statistics of 30 professional baseball teams. Trading is scheduled to begin on October 12, pending regulatory review, starting with the 2026 postseason and four clubs competing in the League Championship Series.
CME Group Expands Sports Derivatives Into Professional Baseball
The derivatives exchange will structure the new instruments around CME FutureSports performance indices, tracking team-level metrics across professional baseball. Tim McCourt, CME senior managing director and global head of equities, foreign exchange, and alternative products, stated that the exchange sees an opportunity to introduce investment and hedging discipline into professional baseball.
The upcoming baseball launch follows a similar expansion into hockey derivatives. In August, the exchange introduced the world’s first index-based hockey futures contracts. These offerings build on a partnership struck in July with FutureSports, aimed at developing derivatives tied to professional and collegiate sports. The initiative provides an alternative to event contracts traded on prediction markets.
Exchanges Integrate Sports and Culture into Financial Markets
U.S. exchanges and prediction markets have increasingly integrated popular cultural and economic themes into financial marketplaces, creating fresh instruments for companies and investors. The push into sports derivatives bridges traditional trading mechanisms with spectator sports, allowing market participants to take positions on team performance metrics rather than standard macroeconomic indicators.

Regulatory oversight remains a key checkpoint before the October 12 target date.
Next Steps for Exchange-Traded Baseball Futures
Regulatory authorities will review the proposed CME FutureSports indices ahead of the mid-October launch window. Trading will initially focus on the 2026 postseason and the four participating League Championship Series clubs before scaling across broader baseball statistical benchmarks.
