The recruitment process, managed directly by the AIK Fotboll board, aimed to find a leader capable of uniting the operational side of the club with its broader organizational goals. According to Mikael Jomer, chairman of the board for both AIK Fotboll AB and AIK Fotbollsförening, Abrahamsson was chosen for his understanding of the intersection between the members’ association and the commercial company.
“After conducting a comprehensive and thorough recruitment process, we on the board are very pleased to welcome Christer to AIK Fotboll,” Jomer said in the club’s official announcement. “He has a proven ability to develop organizations, drive economic and commercial growth, and create the long-term conditions for sporting success.”
Abrahamsson’s primary assignment is to lead the club toward its long-term vision by fully implementing an existing strategic framework. That framework rests on four central pillars: sport, commercial, financial, and member democracy (föreningsdemokrati). The board emphasized his grasp of Swedish elite football as vital for navigating these operational areas.
A Lifelong Supporter Steps Into Leadership
For Abrahamsson, the appointment carries a personal dimension alongside the professional responsibilities. Growing up as an AIK supporter who watched matches from the stadium stands, he described the new role as an honor.
“I feel an enormous pride to be given the opportunity to represent AIK Fotboll,” Abrahamsson said. “The work that the club has done over the past few years to develop a clear strategy and a long-term direction has impressed me. Above all, I am attracted by the strong will to continue developing and the ambition to now take the next step—to translate strategy into concrete actions and results.”
He noted that his personal history with the club influenced his decision to accept the post. “I have grown up with the club and have stood in the stands, which makes it feel extra fun to now be able to help the club forward. Now I look forward to getting to know everyone within the club and setting off the work to continue developing AIK Fotboll.”
