The Asian Games in Aichi-Nagoya have reached a critical juncture as athletes compete for continental honors and, in key sports, direct pathways to the Los Angeles Olympic Games.
Chinese Women’s Hockey Seeks Olympic Qualification
The field hockey tournament at the Asian Games serves as a direct qualifier for the Los Angeles Olympics, with the men’s and women’s champions earning automatic berths. The women’s final features a high-stakes matchup between defending champions China and India. China enters the contest ranked fourth in the world, while India holds the eighth position. This encounter is widely viewed as a battle between the two most formidable sides in the Asian region.
All-Chinese Final in Women’s Tennis
The 37-year-old veteran Zhang secured her spot by defeating Kazakhstan’s Yulia Putintseva in straight sets. Meanwhile, Wang staged a comeback, overcoming a first-set deficit to defeat the tournament’s top seed, Philippines’ Eira, 2-1. On the men’s side, Wu Yibing is set to compete in the semifinals, though his participation in both singles and mixed doubles creates a significant physical challenge for the veteran athlete.
Women’s Football Bronze Medal Match
Following a 2-0 defeat to North Korea in the semifinals, the Chinese women’s football team is preparing to face South Korea in the bronze medal match. The team expects a boost in depth with the return of Wang Yanwen, who was suspended for the semifinal round. The gold medal match is scheduled between Japan and North Korea.
Climbing Gold for China
The Chinese climbing team secured two gold medals on the National Day holiday. Zhang Yue Tong claimed the women’s bouldering title, edging out her Japanese opponent by a 0.2-point margin. In the men’s speed climbing event, Chu Shouhong took the top spot with a finishing time of 4.71 seconds. These victories brought the team’s total to two gold medals for the day.
Men’s Volleyball Advances to Semifinals
The Chinese men’s volleyball team defeated Thailand 3-0 in the quarterfinals to move into the final four. While the scoreline suggests a dominant performance, head coach Vital Heynen noted that the first two sets were difficult, both finishing 25-23. Heynen emphasized that winning those tight early sets was instrumental in securing the overall victory.
Doha 2030-2031 Schedule Uncertainty
The Olympic Council of Asia has proposed shifting future Asian Games to the year preceding the Summer Olympics. This adjustment would move the originally scheduled 2030 Doha Asian Games to 2031. Doha Asian Games Organizing Committee CEO Al-Buena stated that ongoing consultations with the Olympic Council of Asia and various sports federations are currently underway to finalize the date. He affirmed that Qatar remains prepared to host the event regardless of whether it is confirmed for 2030 or 2031.

Rising Talent at the Games
Seventeen-year-old Chen Yuyi concluded her first Asian Games appearance with three gold medals and one silver. Her performance has drawn attention, though officials and team staff maintain that her development remains a long-term focus as she continues to target regional records.
