Bryan Dabo recounts the morning of Davide Astori’s death

More than eight years after the sudden death of ACF Fiorentina captain Davide Astori, former teammate Bryan Dabo has recounted the morning the Italian football world lost its leader, Foot Mercato reported. Astori passed away in his hotel room in Udine on March 4, 2018, at the age of 31, ahead of a scheduled Serie A fixture.

Discovering the Tragedy at the Team Hotel

Dabo, who played as a midfielder for the Tuscan club at the time, detailed the unfolding realization among players and staff when Astori failed to appear for the morning meal. « We go to breakfast, and he is always the first one usually, and this time, he is not there, » Dabo recalled in an interview with Addict O Foot. « Someone asks: “Where is Davide?” We don’t know, so we go back upstairs. I see Stefano Pioli, he opens the door and he is in tears. »

Teammate Cyril Théréau then delivered the news to Dabo directly, telling him, « Bryan, the captain is dead. » The revelation caused immediate turmoil throughout the squad quarters in Udine. « It’s carnage, you see one guy crying, then another, » Dabo said. « We go into the room, we look, and we see the body. Even now, when I talk about it… »

A Legacy That Still Echoes Through Italian Football

Astori’s unexpected passing deeply shook Italian football and devastated Fiorentina, where the defender had become an emblematic figure after arriving in Florence in 2015. Formed at AC Milan, Astori also featured for Cagliari and AS Roma during his career and earned 14 international caps for the Italy national team.

The tragedy prompted widespread mourning across the country, leading the city of Florence to declare a day of municipal mourning for his funeral, while hundreds of supporters gathered outside the Stadio Artemio-Franchi to pay tribute. Dabo noted that the psychological impact of that morning remains with the players who lived through it. « I’ve talked about it with several players, it marked all of them, » he said.
