The Bremen Dockers missed out on promotion to the 1. Baseball-Bundesliga, falling to the Braunschweig 89ers in the decisive games of their semifinal series after a 1-7 and 4-13 defeat in Braunschweig, Weser Kurier reported.
Promotion Hopes End in Braunschweig After Semifinal Defeat
Confidence had run high within the Bremen camp after the team secured an opening 7-3 victory at home in the Fritz-Schütt-Stadion im Henschenbusch. However, the best-of-three series shifted momentum sharply to Lower Saxony. Following the initial win, the Dockers needed just one more victory to advance to the promotion final. Instead, successive losses ended their campaign in the 2. Baseball-Bundesliga Nord, leaving the club to plan for another season in the lower division.
“We played below our capabilities,” head coach Fabrizio Cagliani told Weser Kurier after the elimination. “The better team on this matchday won, and unfortunately that wasn’t us.” Club press officer Luisa Kieschnick noted that three hours of baseball separated the squad from their ultimate objective before the reality of the opponent’s dugout set in.
Thin Roster Forces Coach to Take the Mound
roster challenges severely hampered Bremen throughout the decisive fixtures, leaving Cagliani with only ten available players for the most important games of the year. Although the manager had planned to restrict his duties strictly to coaching entering the season, personnel shortages forced him to step in as a pitcher.
“The roster was unfortunately thinned out,” Cagliani explained. The absence of multiple regular starters created immediate tactical hurdles. In the first leg on the road, Edvardas Matusevičius provided an early spark by hitting a home run to secure a 1-0 lead before taking over as the starting pitcher, returning strongly following an injury. Yet the early advantage failed to translate into sustained offensive production.
Offensive Struggles and Decisive Innings
Despite regularly getting players onto the bases, Bremen repeatedly failed to generate the decisive hit needed to convert opportunities into runs. Kieschnick pointed out that innings frequently concluded before the visitors could capitalize on their baserunners. Braunschweig countered efficiently, hitting two home runs in the second inning to overturn the deficit into a 3-1 lead, later extending the margin to 7-1 through the fourth and fifth frames.
In the final match of the series, Daniel Pryne started on the mound for Bremen. After a strong first inning featuring a double from Yannick Bujalla and an eventual 4-4 tie following a double by Sasha Halushka in the second, the offense stalled completely from the third inning onward. Braunschweig exploited defensive gaps to pull away, prompting Cagliani to take over pitching duties once more and record key strikeouts. The late relief effort could not spark a comeback, locking the final score at 4-13.
Looking Ahead to the Next Campaign
Reflecting on the conclusion of the season, Cagliani acknowledged the offensive shortcomings while emphasizing long-term progress. “We weren’t really mentally in the game offensively,” the coach stated, adding that the team remains on the correct path and will make another promotion push in the upcoming season.
