Braunschweig tennis tournament cancelled for 2027 as sponsor withdraws

The tennis tournament in Braunschweig will not take place in 2027 after its title sponsor, Volksbank BRAWO, withdrew financial backing due to a restructuring process, as MOPO reported.

Volksbank BRAWO Restructuring Triggers Cancellation

The decision to drop the tournament was announced by the Brunswiek Marketing GmbH, a subsidiary of Volksbank BRAWO, which cited the institution’s challenging financial and operational situation. Jürgen Wache, the designated executive board chairman of Volksbank BRAWO, described the step as a bitter but unavoidable decision. Wache stated that the company is currently undergoing an extensive restructuring process to return the bank to stability and success, making the continued sports sponsorship financially unfeasible.

More Than Thirty Years of History in the Bürgerpark

First established in 1994, the Challenger-tour event had been staged annually on the clay courts in the Bürgerpark, carving out a respected reputation within the international professional tennis circuit. Over more than three decades, the tournament had athletes such as Daniel Altmaier regularly competing at the venue as recently as 2024. Operating directly beneath the top tier of the ATP Tour, the Braunschweig fixture became a fixture of the German summer tennis calendar.

Intensive Search for Replacement Sponsors Fails

Following the withdrawal of the title sponsor, tournament organizers initiated a broad search to secure alternative financial backing and new co-organizers to keep the event alive. According to the Brunswiek Marketing GmbH, those efforts ultimately proved unsuccessful. Without a replacement sponsor or a revised operating partnership, the infrastructure and funding required to stage the international tournament could no longer be guaranteed for the 2027 calendar year, bringing a sudden halt to a tradition spanning over thirty years.

Impact on the Professional Tennis Calendar

While local sports fans and tournament director Jäcke expressed profound disappointment at the sudden termination of the event, organizers have confirmed that the decision is final for the upcoming schedule, effectively concluding over three decades of professional tournament tennis in Braunschweig’s Bürgerpark.
