Getafe manager José Bordalás expressed deep dissatisfaction following his team’s narrow Copa del Rey victory over Unión Balompédica Lebrijana, declaring that his squad did not deserve to advance and had nothing to celebrate ahead of their upcoming La Liga fixture against Sevilla FC.
The Copa del Rey Struggle at Lebrija
Getafe secured a 3-2 victory against sixth-tier amateur side Unión Balompédica Lebrijana, but only after overcoming a two-goal deficit. The Madrid-based club conceded twice in the early stages of the match, allowing the lower-tier hosts to take a justified lead during the opening half-hour. Getafe managed to reply with two goals before halftime and eventually edged out the tie, but the performance drew severe criticism from the coaching staff.

Following the match, Bordalás did not hide his frustration with the team’s display against non-professional opponents. We congratulate Lebrija, they played a great game, they received us phenomenally, they treated us very well,
Bordalás said in post-match remarks. They played a very good game, they were superior to us, especially the first half hour and they took the lead fairly. We found two goals in the final stretch of the first half. We have nothing to celebrate, we have not been superior to Lebrija.
The manager added that the professional side’s physical superiority ultimately decided the outcome, but insisted the manner of play was unacceptable. I am not happy because I think we did not deserve to pass, I have nothing more to comment,
he stated. We faced a team from the sixth category that is not professional and they swept over us the first half hour. We cannot allow it.
Mounting Pressure Ahead of Sevilla Visit
The tense atmosphere surrounding Getafe stems from a difficult run of results across competitions. Last weekend, the Azulones suffered a heavy 4-0 defeat away against Athletic Bilbao in La Liga. That followed a 5-2 reverse against Lugano in the UEFA Conference League, leaving the squad under mounting scrutiny as they prepare for Sunday’s league match against Sevilla FC at the Coliseum.
Sevilla travels to Coliseum following a 3-0 victory against Sporting de Hortaleza in Alcalá de Henares. While Getafe’s squad used the Lebrija fixture to give minutes to players returning from injury or seeing less playing time, Bordalás emphasized that the overall level must rise immediately.
You always trust that it will, but the players cannot be happy, just like me,
Bordalás said regarding hopes that the cup tie serves as a turning point. We have to improve. It serves to get minutes for players who have played less, who are coming off an injury. All matches serve to draw positive conclusions and it is clear that we are aware that we have to improve.
Club Relations and Upcoming Opposition
Amid speculation regarding the club’s turbulent form and pressure on the coaching staff, Bordalás addressed questions about his standing with Getafe president Ángel Torres. The manager moved to dismiss any talk of internal friction, describing the bond as solid.
My relationship with the club and the president is fantastic,
Bordalás stated, insisting that there is no type of problem.
Attention now turns squarely to the weekend fixture against Sevilla, a side Bordalás expects to present a stern test in Madrid. We have nothing to celebrate today, [we must] focus on Sevilla, which is going to be tremendously complicated, they have built a competitive squad, it is going to be difficult,
he concluded.
