Die Baskets Juniors / TSG Westerstede reisen am Samstag um 19 Uhr in der BARMER 2. Basketball Bundesliga zu den Iserlohn Kangaroos. Basketball Bundesliga, looking to rebound from a 101-79 opening-night defeat to LOK Bernau. Head coach Artur Gacacev’s young squad enters the matchup aiming to clean up ball-security issues that plagued their season debut, while Iserlohn hosts after securing a dominant opening victory against the SG Braunschweig reserves and newcomers.
Roster Shortages and Standout Performances Against Bernau
Opening weekend exposed the steep developmental curve facing the youthful Westerstede roster. The team played without five key rotation pieces in their loss to LOK Bernau: Joel Harms, Alan Boger, Ore Ewert, Johann Helwig, and Piet Niehus. Some of those sidelined players could return to the lineup for the trip to Iserlohn, offering a much-needed boost in depth. Despite the 22-point deficit, individual standouts provided encouraging signs for the coaching staff. Finn Stühlmeyer delivered a standout double-double with 15 points and 13 rebounds, while Djordje Klaric orchestrated the offense with 11 points and nine assists.
Gacacev Focuses on Reducing Turnovers Before Facing Kangaroos
The primary concern for Gacacev heading into Saturday centers on ball control. The Baskets Juniors committed 26 turnovers against Bernau, a statistic the coaching staff spent the week addressing in training. “We must reduce our turnovers and make better decisions,” Gacacev said. The Kangaroos forced 22 turnovers in their opening win against Braunschweig, converting opposition mistakes into easy transition points. Iserlohn guard Howard Rankine led the charge with 27 points, six assists, and six steals, supported by Paul Lunguana’s 19 points and seven rebounds. Gacacev noted that while Westerstede’s half-court defense held up reasonably well against Bernau, their transition defense must sharpen significantly to prevent quick scores following live-ball mistakes.
Assessing the Opposition Challenge in North Rhine-Westphalia
Gacacev cautioned that Iserlohn presents a significantly stiffer test than they faced during the previous campaign. “Iserlohn is better than last season,” Gacacev said, pointing to the hosts’ aggressive ball pressure and up-tempo execution. The Kangaroos thrive on turning defensive stops into fast-break opportunities, making disciplined floor balance mandatory for the visiting team. For the Baskets Juniors, the objective in North Rhine-Westphalia is maintaining concentration across all 40 minutes and drastically cutting down unforced errors against an opportunistic opponent.
