Badminton Danmark and DGI Badminton adopt 3×15 scoring system

Danish badminton is dropping the 21-point scoring format in favor of a 3×15-point system starting July 1, 2026, ahead of international rule changes set by the governing body. Badminton Danmark and DGI Badminton confirmed the transition, which applies across all age groups, local clubs, regional tournaments, and nationwide team championships. The change means players will contest sets to 15 points instead of 21 across all domestic competition brackets.

Transition to 3×15-Point System Begins July 2026

The new format mirrors several elements of traditional badminton scoring while compressing the duration of each set. Matches remain the best of three sets, with the victor requiring two sets to win. Players earn a point after every completed rally regardless of which side served, according to tournament regulations published by Badminton Danmark.

Set structures introduce strict caps and narrow margin requirements. A set is played to 15 points as a baseline, but if the score reaches 14-14, the side must secure a two-point margin to claim the set. Sets feature a hard cap at 21 points, meaning if the score ties at 20-20, the next rally decides the winner. In a deciding third set, players switch sides once the leading side reaches eight points, at which point competitors may take a sideline break of up to 60 seconds. Standard intervals between sets remain capped at 120 seconds, and the player or pair winning the previous set retains the right to serve first in the next.

International Rules Aligning for 2027

The domestic shift preempts wider global changes. The Badminton World Federation (BWF) decided in April 2026 to adopt the 3×15-point scoring framework for international competition starting in 2027. By implementing the system ahead of the 2026/2027 domestic season, Badminton Danmark and DGI Badminton allow athletes to maintain a consistent scoring structure throughout their domestic calendar rather than adapting mid-season.

Domestic tournaments will enforce the 15-point threshold immediately upon the rule’s enactment. However, international tournaments hosted within Denmark will continue utilizing the legacy 21-point system until the global governing body formally transitions its competition calendar in 2027.
