Asan Woori Bank Opens WKBL Season Under First-Time Coach Jung Joo-hyun
Asan Woori Bank enters the new Women’s Korean Basketball League season as the top-ranked title favorite in fan polls, opening play on November 1 under newly appointed head coach Jung Joo-hyun and marquee free-agent signing Kang Lee-seul. The 54-year-old Jung steps into the top role after spending 14 seasons as a coach supporting former leader Wi Seong-woo, while the 32-year-old Kang arrives following her departure from Cheongju KB in May 2026.
Jung Joo-hyun Takes Over the Bench After Fourteen Seasons as Assistant
Jung inherits a club that finished fourth in the previous season and aims to restore Woori Bank to its historical standing in domestic women’s basketball. During Jung’s tenure as an assistant, the team captured 10 regular-league titles and 8 championship series crowns. Jung stated that while shared philosophies remain from the long partnership with Wi, individual coaching concepts will generate tactical differences on the court.
Kang Lee-seul Joins Woori Bank to Pursue Further Development
Kang’s acquisition provides an immediate offensive boost alongside Kim Dan-bi, who led the league in scoring and rebounding last season. Kang averaged 15.6 points and 6.6 rebounds per game while sinking 69 three-pointers to lead the league in three-point makes for the third season. Kang noted that the decision to change teams at this stage in a career stemmed from a desire to continue learning the sport under Jung, with whom Kang previously worked during the 2021 Tokyo Olympic Games.
Shared Gold Medal History Precedes the New Club Partnership
The relationship between coach and player extends to international duty, where Kang captained South Korea to a gold medal at the Aichi-Nagoya Asian Games in September 2026. That tournament marked the national team’s first gold medal at an overseas Asian Games since the 1994 Hiroshima Games—a competition where Jung served as a player 32 years prior.
