Aryna Sabalenka crashed out of the China Open on Sunday, falling 6-4, 6-3 to Czech player Nikola Bartunkova in the third round in Beijing. The straight-sets defeat on the Diamond court lasted one hour and 35 minutes and left the WTA 1000 tournament without its top two seeds in just over 12 hours.
Sabalenka Falls to Bartunkova in Beijing Third Round
The world number two endured a difficult outing on the hard courts of the Beijing tennis complex, continuing a challenging 2026 season outside of her successful Sunshine Double campaign at Indian Wells and Miami. Sabalenka displayed visible frustration throughout the match, dropping her racket multiple times and struggling to find alternative tactics when her aggressive baseline game misfired. Bartunkova, ranked 34th in the WTA rankings, capitalized on those errors to secure the win of her career. The 20-year-old Czech player broke Sabalenka immediately in the opening game and later saved five break points in the sixth game of the first set to maintain her momentum.
“First of all, I focused on myself, to be calm,” Bartunkova said after the match. “Aryna is great. She’s a legend. She’s a Grand Slam Champion. I’m really happy I won the match.”
Chasing the Top Ranking Slips Further Away
The early exit in Beijing severely damages Sabalenka’s mathematical chances of overtaking Elena Rybakina for the WTA world number one ranking before the season concludes. The points gap between Rybakina and Sabalenka stands at 2,211 points with only 2,500 points left on the table across the remainder of the calendar, including the upcoming WTA 1000 in Wuhan and the WTA Finals. While Rybakina suffered her own unexpected defeat on Saturday against Alina Charaeva in her opening match as the new number one, Sabalenka’s struggles leave her searching for answers ahead of the 2027 season after going without a title since March.

Draw Opens Up as Andreeva and Noskova Advance
With both top seeds eliminated in rapid succession, the China Open draw underwent a dramatic transformation on Sunday. Russian Mirra Andreeva, the fifth seed coached by Conchita Martínez, overcame a shaky start on the Lotus court to defeat Uzbekistan’s Polina Kudermetova 6-4, 6-1 in one hour and nine minutes. Andreeva survived a first set where Kudermetova led 4-2 and weathered seven break points in the second frame. Meanwhile, Linda Noskova cruised past Switzerland’s Viktorija Golubic 6-2, 6-1 in just 56 minutes, wrapping up a masterclass on her first serve to set up a clash against Ekaterina Alexandrova.
Bartunkova Seeks Quarterfinal Spot Against Kraus
Having avoided a repeat of her squandered lead against Sabalenka in Berlin earlier this year—where the Belarusian mounted a three-set comeback from a set and a break down—Bartunkova advanced safely into the fourth round. The young Czech will face Sinja Kraus next in Beijing with a quarterfinal berth on the line.
