AIK hockey coach Viktor Tuurala delivered a tongue-in-cheek jab at Leksand supporters ahead of Friday night’s sold-out Hockeyallsvenskan clash at Avicii Arena, Expressen reported.
A Sold-Out Showdown in Stockholm
The top-of-the-table clash between first-place AIK and second-place Leksand drew a capacity crowd of 13,950 to Avicii Arena, formerly known as Globen. Supporter police officer Lars Winther estimated that roughly 6,000 traveling Leksand fans made the trip to Stockholm, according to Falu-Kuriren. As the teams prepared for face-off, AIK head coach Viktor Tuurala poked fun at the massive contingent of visiting fans from Dalarna.
“It’s fun that a few ‘Bajare’ get to go to hockey,” Tuurala told TV4, referencing the popular nickname for supporters of Stockholm football and bandy club Hammarby. Aftonbladet noted that Hammarby and Leksand share a history of large fan bases outside their core regions, and local rivals Djurgården’s supporters had chanted about both clubs following a match at Hovet the previous evening.
Coaches Marvel at the Arena Atmosphere
Despite the pre-match ribbing, Tuurala quickly shifted tone to praise the roaring environment inside the arena. “Joking aside, it’s fantastic. It’s goosebumps,” he said of the sold-out atmosphere. Leksand head coach Johan Hedberg shared the sentiment as the away fans displayed a large tifo featuring the banner text translated as, “Until the day my heart stops beating, I am white and blue.” Hedberg told TV4 before the game that the atmosphere was completely insane and that he nearly got a tear in his eye looking at the traveling supporters.
Early Penalties Disrupt Top-of-Table Clash
The match brought immediate high drama on the ice as AIK entered the fixture leading the Hockeyallsvenskan standings by three points over Leksand. Just three minutes into the first period, AIK star defenseman Tim Theocharidis received a match penalty for cross-checking, handing the visitors an early advantage in the heated encounter.
