New York Mets pitcher Sean Manaea stepped onto the field in Barcelona to find a baseball environment far different from the one he left behind in Queens, taking in a qualifying tournament that culminated in a historic milestone for the host nation.
Barcelona Qualification Secures Spots for Spain and Italy
The final game of the Barcelona qualifier for the WBSC Premier12 tournament marked a significant juncture for Spanish baseball, wbsc.org reported. World Baseball Softball Confederation President Riccardo Fraccari and Spanish Federation Pablo Carpio used the ceremonial first pitch to induct Jorge Alcauzar into the Spanish Baseball Hall of Fame. Alcauzar, born in 1956, previously managed the Spanish national team during the 1992 Olympic Games.
Spain, ranked 26th in the world, and 13th-ranked Italy secured the first two berths for the 2027 WBSC Premier12 tournament during the Barcelona event. The competition drew attention not only for its tournament implications but also for the presence of Major League Baseball talent observing the growth of the sport abroad.
Manaea Assesses the Rise of European Baseball
Manaea spent two weeks following the tournament action and touring the area with his family. The left-hander, who signed a three-year, $75 million contract with the Mets for 2025, spoke with WBSC officials about what he observed across the Atlantic.
“I love being here,” Manaea said. “We’ve been here for a couple of weeks now, just enjoying everything, and my family and I have had a really, really good time. I’m just happy to be here.”

Asked about his impressions of European competition, the 11-year MLB veteran pointed to the intensity visible in international play. “I haven’t seen too much, but I’m following the World Baseball Classic—I’m watching games right now—and there’s a lot of passion. It’s clearly booming, and I think that’s fantastic. The sport is growing and Europe is definitely an important market. So I’m really glad to see it growing here.”
Reconnecting with Former MLB Adversaries in Dugouts
During his time in Spain, Manaea visited former Major League All-Star Adam Jones, who works on the Spanish national team’s coaching staff. Manaea faced Jones during their respective major league careers.

“He’s a phenomenon. He’s a legend of the sport,” Manaea said. “I had the opportunity to play against him a few times in the big leagues, so he has so much knowledge and it’s cool that he’s helping out here as a coach for the Spanish national team.”
Manaea argued that expanding the talent pool across all five Olympic continents remains vital for the long-term health of the game. “I think it’s massive,” he said. “European players can make a real impact on this sport. It’ll probably take time, but it’s awesome to see it growing. I’m super happy to be here and see the game grow.”

Upcoming Qualifiers Set for Zhongshan
With Barcelona concluding the first wave of qualification, attention shifts to the second tournament scheduled from November 26 to November 28 in Zhongshan, China. Four national teams will battle for the final two spots in the WBSC flagship event: Nicaragua, ranked 15th; Czechia, ranked 16th; China, ranked 19th; and Great Britain, ranked 20th.
