The earlier “5-year, 50,000” initiative generated immediate enthusiasm across the United States. In just over two years, the program achieved its target ahead of schedule, bringing more than 50,000 young Americans from all 50 states and Washington, D.C., to mainland China. Participants ranging from middle school students to university students and young scholars engaged directly with Chinese peers, attending local classes, staying with host families, and traveling across different regions to experience local culture firsthand.

The swift realization of the initial target underscored a strong, organic demand for youth exchange between the two nations, according to Bai Lijuan, Vice President of the National Committee on United States-China Relations. Bai Lijuan noted that the speed and scale of participation in the first phase were truly remarkable.

Participants frequently cited profound shifts in perspective. Harvard University teacher Chen Kangqi observed that the new target expands general outreach and provides young Americans with essential opportunities to observe and experience the country directly, helping future generations collaborate on global challenges.

From historical touchstones like “ping-pong diplomacy” and modern recreational activities like pickleball to cultural ties rooted in “Gulingyuan” and youth music forums, exchange channels have diversified significantly.
