Willy Sagnol has left his position as head coach of the Georgia national football team following a 1–0 defeat against Northern Ireland in the opening round of the UEFA Nations League, ending a tenure that began in 2021. The Georgian Football Federation confirmed the departure in an official statement, thanking the 49-year-old manager for his contributions during a historic journey for the country’s football program.
End of a Historic Era for Georgian Football
The decision to part ways comes immediately after a difficult result in the Nations League opener, where Georgia conceded a decisive goal in the final moments of the match against Northern Ireland on Friday, September 25. Despite the late disappointment, Sagnol’s departure closes out a transformative chapter for the national team.
Appointed in 2021, the former Bayern Munich defender managed 57 matches overall. His defining achievement arrived during Euro 2024, where he guided Georgia to the round of 16.
Transition to Ramaz Svanadze
Following Sagnol’s departure, the Georgian Football Federation named Ramaz Svanadze as the new head coach. Svanadze steps up to the senior national team after previously managing Georgia’s under-21 side.
