El Villarreal secured its first victory of the season with a 1-3 comeback win against Málaga, after a dominant display on the road. The Castellón side engineered their most complete performance of the campaign so far, overturning an early deficit sparked by Carlos Dotor.

Carlos Dotor Stuns Castellón Early
Playing away from home, Villarreal initiated the encounter with heavy physical dominance in the center of the pitch. Málaga struggled initially to play out from the back against the intense visiting press.
Yet, against the run of play, the hosts struck first. Midfielder David Larrubia launched a sharp counterattack, assisting Juan Cruz on the right wing. Cruz delivered a cross into the area that Dotor met; his shot clipped a defender, completely wrong-footing Villarreal goalkeeper Peter Gulácsi.
Alberto Moleiro Restores Parity Before the Break
That breakthrough gave Málaga an unexpected lead from their very first shot on target.
However, Villarreal responded immediately, pinning the hosts deep inside their own penalty box. Alberto Moleiro, Ilias Akhomach, and Ayoze all carved out threatening opportunities before the breakthrough arrived. Akhomach drove down the right flank and whipped a low cross into the six-yard box, where Moleiro met it without any defensive resistance to equalize at 1-1.
Pape Gueye Changes the Momentum
The visiting side capitalized on their momentum just before the halftime whistle. Following an injury to Santi Comesaña, substitute Pape Gueye entered the match and made an immediate impact.
In additional time at the end of the first half, Ayoze provided a clever assist that Gueye swept home to hand Villarreal a 2-1 lead heading into the break.
Late Penalty Seals Maximum Points
Villarreal maintained their aggressive tempo after the interval despite tactical changes from the Málaga bench. Ayoze nearly extended the lead with a header, though Málaga goalkeeper Alfonso Herrero and central defender Ángel Recio combined to clear the danger off the line. Shortly after, Georgian forward Georges Mikautadze rattled the goalframe with a fierce shot that struck the post.
The contest was effectively put to bed in the 85th minute. Match referee Miguel Ángel Ortiz whistled for a penalty in favor of Villarreal following a foul on Maciá inside the area. Gueye stepped up and converted from the spot, sealing the 1-3 scoreline and securing all three points.
