Tadej Pogačar has officially brought a premature end to his 2026 cycling season after suffering a severe crash during the Vuelta a España, according to an official announcement from UAE Team Emirates-XRG. The Slovenian rider, who sustained a displaced left collarbone fracture, a stable C7 cervical vertebra fracture, a concussion, and multiple abrasions during the August 29 race, will not return to competition until 2027.
The Crash and Early Exit from the Vuelta
The incident occurred on August 29, 2026, during the eighth stage of the Vuelta a España, roughly 32 kilometers from the finish line. Medical evaluations confirmed the extent of the damage that evening, forcing the five-time Tour de France champion to abandon the Spanish Grand Tour.
Pogačar underwent a successful surgical procedure on his left clavicle on August 31, 2026. Following the operation, he shared an update from his hospital bed wearing a neck brace, accompanied by the Bee Gees track “Stayin’ Alive.”
Missed Championships and Autumn Classics
With his season officially concluded, Pogačar will miss a significant slate of autumn racing where he was set to defend major titles.
“After his crash at La Vuelta, Tadej will not return to competition this season in order to focus fully on his recovery and rehabilitation,” UAE Team Emirates stated on social media. Pogačar echoed that sentiment, noting, “Right now, the most important thing is to recover properly and give my body the time it needs.”
Long-Term Commitment Through 2032
Despite the abrupt end to his campaign, the team and rider announced a major long-term agreement. UAE Team Emirates-XRG confirmed that Pogačar has signed a contract extension keeping him with the organization through the end of the 2032 season.
“From the beginning, this team has felt like home to me,” Pogačar said regarding the renewal. “We’ve grown together over the years and shared incredible moments, so I am very happy to extend my contract through 2032. There is still a lot that I want to achieve in this sport, and I believe this is the right place to do it.”
Next Steps and Recovery
Pogačar’s immediate focus shifts entirely to physical rehabilitation following his cervical vertebra and clavicle fractures. No specific timeline for a return to training has been established beyond his team’s confirmation that he will sit out the remainder of 2026 and target a comeback in 2027.
