Swiss top referee Désirée Blanco has ended her career with immediate effect due to ongoing heart issues. The 43-year-old official had a pacemaker implanted four years ago. Recent cardiological checkups revealed abnormalities linked to her strenuous training regimen.
A Pacemaker, Intensive Training, and Medical Realities
The decision to step down from top-flight officiating came after a medical checkup flagged concerning irregularities. Blanco spoke to the Swiss newspaper Blick about the physical toll required to maintain elite refereeing standards, noting that her training sessions were so intense she often could not eat for three hours afterward. When she adjusted her routine to ease the strain, she found her focus on the pitch suffered.
“After I changed the routine, my focus during games was no longer the same. I was no longer ready in my head and in my legs. I had to say: It doesn’t work anymore.”
Prioritizing Long-Term Wellness Over the Pitch
In an official statement released by the Swiss Football Association, Blanco emphasized that safeguarding her long-term health outweighed her dedication to the sport.
“As much as I love top-tier football and refereeing, I do not want to put my health at risk,” she explained.
Alongside her medical situation, Blanco pointed to growing responsibilities in her personal and professional life as a contributing factor in her sudden retirement. Balancing the rigorous demands of elite officiating with a demanding career and family life ultimately proved unsustainable.
Closing a High-Profile Tenure on the Swiss and European Stage
Blanco’s final appearance on the pitch occurred over the weekend during the Swiss Super League fixture between FC Basel and FC Lugano. Her sudden exit concludes a high-profile tenure that included officiating at last year’s UEFA Women’s Euro and the Swiss top flight.
Over the course of her distinguished career, she oversaw 23 matches in the top tier of Swiss men’s football. On the international stage, she officiated two matches during the Women’s European Championship hosted in Switzerland.

Looking back on her path through the ranks, Blanco expressed pride in her achievements within a male-dominated officiating space. As a former Swiss national team player, her transition to the whistle brought unique challenges and rewarding milestones.
“It was anything but easy and makes me enormously proud to have come this far,” Blanco stated in the federation’s announcement. She added that refereeing provided her with “countless wonderful moments” and formed an essential chapter of her life, making the final whistle especially difficult to blow.
