Curry Rejects Free-Agency Speculation and Commits to Golden State

The offseason landscape shifted dramatically when LeBron James walked away from the Los Angeles Lakers to sign with the Philadelphia 76ers after a lengthy free-agency saga. When asked if that high-profile departure made him reconsider his own standing with the Warriors, Curry offered an immediate and definitive response.

“Not at all,” Curry said during his interview with CNBC. “I’ve always stated that I want to be a lifer with Golden State, what we’ve built there, the fact that I get to run it back this year with Draymond and Coach Kerr.”

Curry acknowledged the volatile nature of the league, noting that circumstances evolve rapidly across the association. Even so, he emphasized that his core mission remains unchanged. “Things change really fast, but I do know my interest and mission to stay in Golden State and be competitive is there, and the contract stuff will take care of itself,” he added.

Extension Window Opens and Front Office Stance

The star guard became eligible for a two-year, $136.7 million contract extension. Golden State general manager Mike Dunleavy confirmed that the front office intends to place the deal on the table the moment Curry is ready to sign. Dunleavy made it clear that the organization views the timeline entirely as Curry’s prerogative.

“I’m pretty confident Steph will finish his career here. But ultimately, it’s his call, his decision,” Dunleavy stated, adding that while the team would be reluctant to see him anywhere else, the player has earned the right to dictate his path.

If signed, the new two-year extension would run through the 2026-27 campaign and is projected to push Curry’s career earnings past the totals amassed by James.

Recruiting Efforts and Roster Realities

Curry’s steadfast loyalty comes despite a turbulent prior season for the franchise. Golden State required a gritty play-in tournament run just to secure a postseason berth, and the roster suffered significant blows when Jimmy Butler sustained a torn ACL and Moses Moody incurred a season-ending injury.

Reflecting on those physical setbacks, Curry noted how quickly team dynamics shift. “The through line, which is hard on anybody in this situation, especially with us keeping this thing together, is knowing that when Jimmy got hurt and Moses got hurt, the whole calculus of everything changes… I’m a realist on that,” he told reporters.

Earlier in the summer, Curry served as a primary recruiter in the Warriors’ unsuccessful bid to lure James to San Francisco, leveraging their gold-medal winning chemistry from the 2024 Olympic team. When James ultimately chose Philadelphia instead, Curry maintained a balanced perspective, telling The Athletic’s Marcus Thompson II, “That’s why you don’t envision anything until it happens. There’s a lot of moving parts.”
