The sports community in the Navarrese town of Lesaka is mourning the death of local mountaineer and triathlete Bixente Igarzabal. He died at the age of 53 following a fatal fall while in the Alps alongside other people, according to local officials.
Tragedy in the Alps Shakes Lesaka
Igarzabal was known for his athletic achievements and discipline across multiple sports disciplines. He suffered the fatal accident during an expedition in the mountain range. News of the tragedy reached the town of Lesaka early Monday, leaving local residents and municipal leaders shaken by the loss.
Mayor Confirms Loss and Community Grief
Ladis Satrustegi, the mayor of Lesaka, confirmed the athlete’s passing in statements reported by EFE. The mayor noted that municipal authorities immediately reached out to the family to offer condolences and assist with the necessary procedures.
“Although he was no longer so young—53 years old—he was a person whose time had not yet come,” Satrustegi told EFE, reflecting on the impact the news has had on the local population. The mayor described Igarzabal as a disciplined athlete who excelled across a spectrum of physical disciplines.
A Legacy Across Endurance Sports
Throughout his sporting career, Igarzabal competed and distinguished himself in basketball, sokatira, foot races, and mountaineering. He also earned recognition in triathlons, successfully completing several Ironman.
Beyond his records and physical endurance, Igarzabal was known for his capacity to mobilize fellow athletes. “He was a person who moved people along with him. He was always making trips to the mountains with one group or another, climbs” and other sporting activities, Satrustegi said.
Festivities Honor
In recognition of his sporting contributions, the Ayuntamiento of Lesaka honored Igarzabal in 2018 by inviting him to launch the txupinazo, the traditional rocket that marks the official start of local festivities.
Municipal authorities have indicated they will continue to support the family through the procedures as the community processes the loss of one of its sportsmen.
