An Unprecedented Milestone Across Two Tournaments

The record-breaking sequence did not happen overnight. After conceding to Japan’s Ao Tanaka in the 51st minute of a group-stage match on December 1, 2022—a game Spain lost 2-1—the Basque goalkeeper locked down his net. He kept a clean sheet for the remainder of that match and through the entire 120 minutes of the round-of-16 clash against Morocco.

The streak extended deep into the 2026 World Cup, where Simón anchored the Spanish defense through the group stage—facing Cabo Verde, Saudi Arabia, and Uruguay—and advanced past Austria and Portugal in the knockout rounds.

Surpassing Walter Zenga and Iker Casillas

Simón’s remarkable run officially surpassed some of the most revered names in goalkeeping history.

On the domestic front, Simón also shattered the previous Spanish national record held by Iker Casillas. Casillas had accumulated 476 minutes without conceding a goal across the 2010 and 2014 World Cups. Simón’s historic march finally ended at 650 minutes in the quarterfinals against Belgium, when Charles De Ketelaere managed to beat the Spanish number one.
